Apexi Power FC on Standard FD RX-7.

Hi,

I am considering buying a Power FC mainly for the monitoring capabilities. My question is can I simply just buy the Power FC plug it in follow the installation instruction and everything will be ok? Or will I require the Power FC to be tuned or will the standard default set up for the Power FC be ok for a completely standard 1995 RX-7?

I'm not having any issues with my standard management system and everything is ok, but as I said I’m really after the additional monitoring capabilities.

Thanks for you help,
James.

It is recommended that the car get mapped after installation.

The base map on the power FC is quite safe to use and should be OK. I have heard of a couple of people having a lumpy idle after installing it though. As long as you follow the installation properly and let it go through the learn process you should be fine though.

You can run the pfc with the standard set up. It comes with a standard map, just plug and play and will keep you informed as whats exactly going on under the bonnet. Its money well spent.

Thanks for the advice guys.

Where would you recommend would be the best place to pick one up? Had a look at the Apexi web site, unfortunately it seems to be aimed at the American and Japanese market only.

I bought mine on ebay from a guy called trevor ilford. Good service and was easily the cheapest I could find at the time. There are different ones depending on the year of your car so make sure you get the right one. A few of the vendors above sell them too and could give you good advice on installation.

nengun.com do them (inc. commander) for about £350, ordered one from them myself recently:

I'll be running it with a standard setup and I plan to have it properly mapped rather than run the base map.

Depends on where in the 'UK' you are based.

Down south you have ReWorx, Dragon, RX Motors, Rotary Imports, Hayward Rotary and up north you have WGT.

I'm based in Nottingham, so not really sure which is my closest RX-7 specialist.

If you have everything stock then no, quite the opposite, they tend to run richer than the standard ECU.

Just been looking at Nengun's web site, the price for a PFC with Commander is very good. However, they did mention that the equipment would be subject to import duty, any idea how much this is?

so it's pretty simple stuff then? it's just that my fd has a fully decatted exhaust and apexi twin air filter induction kit and by now it must be close to running 'dangerously' lean. i keep thinking about buying one (stick it on the old credit card-like everything else...lol) and also my boost gauge reads 6-5-7, i dont know if it's a faulty gauge, but i wouldn't be able to afford to get it mapped till a month later. is it worth buying it even though it would run the standard 'base' map for month or would i be putting my engine at further risk with it not being mapped correctly?

if you understand what i'm trying to say!!!

Without the CAT or a boost controller you could get some serious spikes even now, so be careful with it. Does your boost gauge measure in PSI or BAR?

If its bar then 6-5-7 seems ok to me

no!!, reads in psi but doesn't spike (if it's what i think mean)although slight drop in power when the turbo switches over at 4250rpm. what do you reckon? turbo problem or fuelling? maybe the ecu wont let it boost up to 10 psi if it sense's it will run lean. i dont if the ecu is that itelligent, lol. just an idea!!
