View Full Version : 818 on e-bay!!!!!

travellinbob
11th September 2004, 06:21 PM
Hi everyone, just been cruising e-bay and found a mazda 818 4 door and looks like it might be going cheap. Go on you know you want to. The fastest way to a faster car is a lighter one, (gonna annoy so many people by this:D ) so go old skool. Newish RX7's are great but just a little porky!
I would bid on this but me chick wuold skin me alive and roll me in salt. ( have to sell my 1970 144 vovlo first).

p.s. isnt someone else going to post something else in this section or are the moderatrs going to re-name it the travellinbob thread.:rollin

Whats the item number buddy, canny see it any where??

flectron

wow bob that's quite a find. i'm trawling ebay all the time and this 'un slipped the net. looks pretty clean too.
love those dogtooth seats - same as my 1000:D
i would definitely be interested in this if i hadn't spent all my money on my 3. Might phone him anyway in case it goes stupidly cheap.
Rich it's item 2489258815 at
this link (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=52640&item=2489258815&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW)

bob, i'll contribute m8, but the rotor's not here yet...

Gord:D

I phoned the guy,
He seemed ok.
His name is Nigel.
I tried to find out what he would take for the car but he was not letting on.He said make him an offer.
He bought it from an old lady a couple of years back and is hoping that by now it is worth a bit.
The car looks real tidy in the pics, and he said it was pretty good.
It has a vinyl roof.
Kind regards
Carl
;)

travellinbob
12th September 2004, 11:07 AM
the worst thing about these cars on e-bay is worrying if some one will buy it and destroy it. I have never seen an 818 with a vinyl roof before. And considering the last old skool car i saw on e-bay was a 1300 sedan and it went for about £300.
I am about 3 months away from being in a position of buying an old skool. Need to buy new welder and as said before, sell vovlo.
would be great to see it on the forum in the hands of an enthusiest:D .....with a set of slicks and a 20b....

travellinbob
12th September 2004, 11:47 AM
hey flectron, hmmm, nice rx3. By the way do you use your 1000 every day?

MikeLMR
12th September 2004, 12:48 PM
I know the guy who sold the 1300 sedan ... offered it to me for £150 a month before ... no space and no money = :(

ooooooooh the 818 looks nice (photos are rubbish though!) agreed whoever buys that needs to keep it standard ish and not ruin it.

Mike

travellinbob
12th September 2004, 04:38 PM
to keep it standard would be cool indeed although rotorising it tastefully and cleverly isnt too hard. I think the only major body mod would be to make sure the clitch fork has enough clearance in the transmission tunnel. Apart from that my old 818 had a 13bturbo with a supra 5 speed and only the afformentioned body mod.
£150 for the 1300:eek: Damn the small yards in the uk. In oz i had a quarter acre and wasnt afraid to fill it:D

flectron
12th September 2004, 06:48 PM
yeah bob i use it most days at the moment. i'm hanging out to garage it and start resto/ upgrade (eventually rotorize), but like you say, yards are just too small here...
As soon as i have more space i'll be picking up a different daily..
cheers
gord:D

travellinbob
13th September 2004, 06:02 PM
hey guys, getting nerve wracking now with only a bit over a day to go on the auction and no one has bid. tell your friends, tell your family:D
Carl, sure you dont got enough room for it? It needs a good home.

MikeLMR
13th September 2004, 06:12 PM
if it goes for £50 I may HAVE to find room for it. (although when I'd find time to drive it i don't know !?!)

I doubt the reserve is set that low as the guy sounds like he is trying to make a quick £ out of it.

travellinbob
13th September 2004, 06:15 PM
yeah i definately think that he wants more cash for it, and even though i think itis a v good example there doesnt seem to be that much demand for old skool mazdas. I bought my ovlov off e-bay and it had a stack of bidders going for it.
yeah go on mike, it is not like you just want it, more like you need it:D

MikeLMR
13th September 2004, 06:22 PM
no i really need an older rx in this sort of condtion :)

its about the only thing that would make me part with my 7

travellinbob
13th September 2004, 09:05 PM
jeez mike dont tell anyone else on the forum that you would part with your 7 for an old skool piston powered mazda, they might lynch me for enciting desertion.

p.s.(have you rung him yet:) )

flectron..: would you not call your 1000 a 2 door sedan rather than a coupe. I thought that the olny coupes had the same body as an R100. Oh and is it a 1000, or a 1200or 1300? Just curious. I love these little acrs and am finding it very interesting discovering all the differences between the aussie on es and the british ones.

ausie. UK.
808 -------- 818
capella------ 616.

the first mazda rx7 shape in oz had 3 different models. Series 1, 2, and 3. lot of differences between the first one and the last.

The second type pf 7 was the turboII. We call them in oz the series 4.

And the last shape we call the series 6.

MikeLMR
13th September 2004, 09:25 PM
was called the 818 as those useless french car builders decided it was infringing on their convention of using 2 numbers seperated by a 0 hence why some early mazda's have 1's in the UK

{edit} no not rung about it ... the less I think about it the less likely I am to buy it :D

P.S notice I said "older rx" an 818 wouldn't cut the mustard unless it was a rotarised sleeper already :) (or a coupe ... that'd be cool)

flectron
13th September 2004, 09:31 PM
just checked the paperwork on my 1000 and it is indeed '2 door saloon'. my bad.
don't think you guys ever got 1000s in aus, only 1200s and 1300s.

about this 818 - anyone know mot status?

gord:D

Carl
13th September 2004, 10:31 PM
No mot.
I have spoken a little more to the guy and he wants a fair bit for it as the reserve price.
I am fairly keen on it but have not made my mind up fully.
I also have too many other projects I should do.
If any of you are seriuos about it pm me.
Kind regards
Carl

Out of interest guys, how easy is it to drop a rotary into the 818? I know it is basically the same shell as the RX4 (is that right?) because I would only even consider it if I could rotarise the beast. The LHD RX7 is about to go and Ali & I need a new project car, but it depends on £££ and ease of conversion (as well as sourcing a good cheap 12a or 13b)

It is a piston version of the RX3.
The car should be pretty easy to convert to rotary power.

there's loads of info about rotarizing 808s on the ausrotary forum - especially 808 wagons as the rx3 wagon is so scarce.

gord:D

travellinbob
14th September 2004, 12:28 PM
the 818's are very easy to convert, i have done this once myself and have heped with at least 3 others. In oz you can buy off the shelf reproduction engine cross members which makes the job very simple. the only thing you will need a hand with possibly will be the wiring. ask someone like Carl for help on this as I am sure he knows his stuff very well. And yeh as Flectron said, check out the ausrotory forum web site. You will find more photos and info than you will know what to do with:D

travellinbob
15th September 2004, 01:13 PM
so which one of you was it then????? I just checked it and it only has about 2 hours left but has recieved 1 bid.
Heres hoping it goes to a good home.

ok, so it seems that it didnt exactly invite a bidding war abd neither did it reach its reserve but the good thing was that the guy at least put his number on the page so that he can reached at a later date.
I have been e-mailing a guy trying to sell a turboII with 3 extra engines( in glasgow so not too far away fo rme). I am mostly wanting the engines if he would sell them separately. Did he reply?? no. Bummer. And i dont think he sold it either.
So I guess i will just keep on saving for my ideal old skool mazda. I did take delivery of my TO4 today.:D

lets keep the old skool section alive and kickin.

I know I am just digging up an old thread here but does anyone know if this 818 sold after the auction finished?
oh and the afformentioned Ant...., was he the same Ant that was selling an RX3 coupe with a turboII motor in it on e-bay 5 or so months ago?

20B_boy
16th October 2004, 07:31 PM
Yep, same Ant. Had the lime coupe with a TII motor. Also has, a 96 FD (for sale), another '3 coupe which did have a 12a B/P from recollection, an RX8, a mint RX2, and at least one or two other 3's needing work...

olskoolrotor and i talked about this on the phone today:

even though i live close enough to rotorstock to crawl home on my hands and knees, naked and only be slightly embarrased, it would be decent to get an old-skool rotorstock campsite going to meet and greet the fellow enthusiasts and get drunk to the point of incontinence.
bob, i'm afraid your attendance is manditory - anyone else going overnight interested?

oh, and back to topic... (and an embarassingly non-rotary question)
the seller of the 818 didn't know what kind of fuel it took. it was obviously leaded as stock, but is there a way for me to tell if it was ever converted?
i've been running it on unleaded 'til today due to the scarcety of LRP at my girlfriend's bit, but it flows freely in cheltenham and only after twenty quid of the leaded goodness was already pumped i realised it could conceivably have been converted at some point..
if it had, would leaded fuel be bad?

gord:D

MikeLMR
25th January 2005, 12:06 PM
no cat = OK to run on leaded fuel

When the fuel blockades were on I filled up my 323 with LRP ... that p1ssed loads of people off as there wasn't a queue and there was loads of it :)

Just looking at diary and I think that i have a quiite important seling fair to go to in Perth around the same time as rotorstock. So for now it looks like I wont be able ot make it. Also just finished a huge meeting with our works accountnant and seems we will be definately egtting a tax bill this year so unfortunantly all work on cars has come to a stop until things lighten up. The rear side windows actually wind down as well, so with no pillar on the front door the whole side is "open"

Great for doing Dukes Of Hazard stylee entries:rollin

Now Gord, dont try to fight it. You tried that a few weeks ago and look what you ended up taking home. I think you should definately listen to Richard. Seems like a decent bloke!:D
And plus it is way more practical thana wee 1000.
There are a few of these, quite a few actually, cruising in oz with rotors and they are great.
Unfortuantly I only have enough space in my life for one other car and that car has to be really quite small............say like the size of a 1000, i guess......:D
