Hi all,
I am looking to buy an RX 7 and was given this forum address as a good source of info for the Mazda RX 7.
Hope you guys can help.
I am looking to buy a new car and came across the RX 7, It is a nice car and has everything I am looking for + its a very good looking car.
The thing is that I have been informed that they need an engine rebuild @ 40-60K miles.
I was wondering if you guys could give me an idea if this car is for me.
I am currently 26, I have 4years NCB and have had 1 accident in 2000 (£1000 total repair damage to both cars.)
I have had a quote (Adrian Flux) of £1,200 for a UK "92" standard RX 7 twin turbo. This was my first quote. I just wanted to get an idea of the insurance costs.
I will use the car for travelling to and from work (5miles in total) and normall everyday driving, I will also use to drive to Leeds 1 a month (500 mile round trip - twice every now and then)
Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Welcome :wave, I have a couple of questions for you. I hope you dont mind.
What budget do you have for the car itself?
Where are you looking to purchase the car from?
and
What car are you coming from?
There seems to be this misticle figure of 40-60,000 miles for rebuild. This can be higher depending on the type of care the previous owner(s) have taken of the car.
My car is starting to show signs of needing a rebuild. The previous owner only had stuff like oil changes done when the service book said it needed them. I tend to do them every 3000 miles. Its covered just over 60,000 miles. I know of cars that have covered more and less miles than this.
Rebuilds cost from around £1600 upwards, depending on the sort of build that you are after, and the parts required.
Insurance is a mine field at the best of times. The club has a deal setup with AON for its members to help with this problem. We have a dedicated person to deal with us, and cover everything from standard UK models, to modified imports. Check under the insurance forum.
Hope this helps a little, please ask as many questions as you need to ease the mind battle.
You wont regret purchasing an RX-7. Driving pleasure is second to none. :D

Hi Dan ,
My budget is about £8000.
I am looking for a UK RX 7 as I have been told insurance for a Jap import is more expensive ? i've been quoted £2,358 by Adrian Flux for a Jap "92" 2.6 twin turbo coupe with no mods.
I currently drive a Rover 420 GSI.
Also, does the 7 need alot of care. I dont mind doing a few things but i'm no mechanic.
Cheers
Paul

Paul, you will be able to get an early model RX-7 (FD) for that money, but the milage will be quite high. Might even find one that has already been rebuilt.
I guess that your Rover returns around 30-35 mpg, RX-7's return around 15-25 depending on the driving. Later models seem to be better on fuel con.
They are very thirsty beasts. :rollin
They just need regular oil changes being the main part. As I said in my earlier post, I do them every 3000 miles, and most owners seem to also follow this rule as well.
Check under the 'For Sale' forum, there is a silver auto up for grabs at £8500 (http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=627)

OK Penny, pence.. whatever you fellas call your lowest valued coin.
In either case the upkeep for an rx7 can get expensive as most of you know.

a general rule of thumb is about 1000-1500usd per year in just general upkeep. its more if something actually breaks (like the motor)
