Does anyone know what sort of ECU this is? and whether they are 16 bit etc?
I know its a knightsports, but was wondering about which model etc it may be.

Hi Graham thats a knightsports 4beat 8bit ecu. The 16 bit version of this ecu was only for rx7's manufactured from November 1995 onwards. These ecu's are setup to alter boost, ignition timing, fuel maps, delimits the top speed from 112mph.

Thanks Brian, is it regarded as a good one? or would an Power FC be better, and any ideas whether the Ron settings can be altered on this ecu?
Thanks

It is a good ecu Graham. Knightsports tend to lean more to reliability than they do out and out performance. I was down at Tim's at rxmotors who has a knightsports ecu in one of his cars, he was raving on about how the car goes like stink just lastweek.
In my own opinion, I think alot is sometimes made about the difference in Ron from Japan to Uk and how this can destroy your engine, I don't really agree. Ok ecu's in Japan are mapped for 100 and and people say they wouldn't put a Japanese ecu on there car because they would blow their engine. Well the apexi is also a Japanese ecu and is very popular and works well, without and kind of proof of destroying an engine. I think if you have shell optimax in your car, and you car is in proper working order, you will have no problems. Your car is not going to die because your using a slightly lower octane rating. The apexi pfc will only be better if you want more after market parts and need to adjust the mapping, whereas what you have now to alter the maps you would have to send it off to knightsports and get them to do it then send it back, which means you would be without a car for a while. If someone else answer this question your quite likely to get differing opinions. This is just my perspective. I tend to think how a car is tuned rather what parts are installed is what makes the difference between Go and Blow.

Thanks Brian, good info there, as far as im concerned the RX has plenty of go, so my main priority is reliability, so glad that appears to be Knightsports' as well.
What are the main advantages of the 16 bit as opposed to the 8 bit ecu's? and I assume its impossible to put a 16 bit on a pre '95 anyway?

Knightsport do a loom convertor from 8 to 16 bit ECU's.
The main ability of the 16 bit ECU is that it has better learning abilites than the 8 bit.
If you car going to use this ECU, can I recommned that you use an octane booster of some sorts. As Brian said, they are mapped for 100 RON fuel and not even optimax on its own can match this, but you are close to it with some octane booster in it.

My car already has the Knightsports ecu, thats a pic of it fitted (my car is away for a service today thou).
I have been using octane booster, but its costly!! I was going to use just Optimax, but am not too sure what sort of danger Im putting the engine in by doing so.
Car has induction, cat back exhaust, high perf cat mods, so the ECU was added to ensure proper fuelling etc apparently (Miguel mentioned this).

The difference between the knightsports 8bit ecu & there 16bit, is literally just the connection to the loom. This is because from November 95 onwards rx7's had a 16bit ecu which used a different loom. The difference in the standard rx7 ecu from 8 to 16 bit was the 16 bit ran a little richer and managed the operation of the turbos better, and few other nit bits that's not performance related.

Also Graham don't forget that even if you had a stock car with stock ecu from Japan, the stock ecu is still mapped for 100 octane fuel. So if a afterkmarket ecu will kill an engine because it's mapped for 100 octane rating then as far as my understanding goes so should a stock ecu too. Call this theory of mine what's good for the goose is good for then gander.
