I would start with checking the battery cables (take them both off, clean them - and make sure they go back on securely), then check all the fuses.

If those all check out ok, try changing the battery with one from a car you know is ok.

Is your alternator charging ok? could be why it is stuffed now.

Hi Sam,

Sounds like it's not chargeing and it's got a dead altonator or the altonator belt is realy loose and needs adjusting, also check the leads on the battery and connections actualy on the altonator ,
Also check if the battery has got water covering the plates when looking inside as if it's overchargeing due to a regulator fault it will dry out the battery and "run" out of power.

p.s. it may be worth a call to see if the previous owner charged the battery up to sell the car !

All the Best Clive.

Hi Sam,

That would be it! :)

Probably best to check with your local Mazda dealer, see if you can get a part number for it.

Maybe check www.iluvmyrx7.com - you may find a part number there, then see if an aftermarket one is made.

Sam, you can go to Halfords. I replaced 2 of my 3 belts from there a few weeks ago and the alt. belt last year.

No special tools needed, beyond a socket set. Just make sure you've got the right sockets, eg: 10, 12, 13 and 14mm. A screwdriver to stop the fan turning while you undo the nuts, (can be quite tight.) Something to lever against the air pump to retension it. (Spanner or such-like.) If you go slowly and find you don't fancy going further you can always reverse out of the situation by undoing everything you've done so far.

Or...if you're really unsure, take it to a garage.

Just make sure there's about 1/2 an inch play (up and down) in the mid-point of each belt and you should be OK.
