I am thinking of purchasing a 3rd gen RX7 but would like a few questions answered from some owners. Firstly some insurance companies say the RX is insurance group 20 but i have seen it at 18 anyone know why and what is the best insurer.
Also how much care and attention do they need, how temperamental are the rotary engines. One last question, what sort of miles to the gallon do they do, i have heard betwween 20-38, but someone sais more like 10 could someone please help me cheers.

the difference in groups may be due to the differences between UK spec and Jap spec as some cars have 250hp and others have nearer 280hp (I think)

Can give you my own experience on two of your questions.
My 98. is insurance group 20 - I got my best quote form 'Chris Knott' off this web site.
Not had my car long and I'm not sure how tweeked it is but I'm getting 13mpg 'round town'. No high rev just normal driving - and 18ish on a run.
I imagine I could get this down to single figures without much effort.

my fd is a jap import, the type r and its a group 18, i dont think the insurance company realise the jap imports have more power than uk ones, and as for mpg, i get about 13-18, never so 15 on average, never any more!

Hi,
We have a very special insurance deal that we have negotiated hard for that will be announced in the next club newsletter due out in a week or so , and providing that people meet the requirements required i.e. age etc it will give people a significant saving who drive Rotary vehicles from now on.
Although to take full advantage of this discount people need to be a full member quoting your membership number, we will only post details of this offer after the newsletter reaches our paying members first , you should be able to get some sort of discount even if you are not just by using the number we will make available on the forum.
BTW people will not be able to "fake" a membership No because the insurance company will be checking every members number against their name that enquires for a quote.
Hope this helps

Are you able to say what the min age would be. I hopefully going to be getting insurance in the next month or slightly less and it would be good to know if it would be worth calling, or hanging off from taking the insurance from another company.
Thanks

Real Sorry Steve they won't insure 17 to 25 year olds ,but we still have others for you to get quotes from and if it's any help one company that would seem to be able to help younger people is Tesco's.
Having said that our new company is prepared to not only prepared to insure our older cars but will take on ANY modifications to Rotary's except NOS, which should help quite a few of our members .

I don't think it would be a '99 spec if its a K reg, it probably means it was imported in 99.
As for petrol, depends on how far you drive/ how you drive it!! I spend about £40, doing about 180 miles!!
For insurance, try Directline for drivers under 25, they beat Tescos! Also, Adrian Flux gave me a quote. Most other companies wouldn't!

The only other car I am interested in is the BMW compact 318 ti SE, this would be much more economical, but the looks and power are nothing compared to the 7?

What I would say is if money may be tight after buying a car then don't get an rx7. Might seem strange hearing that from someone that sells them and also being on a rx7 forum, but they are expensive to run. I drive mainly around London and I spend around £80 per week on petrol. Servicing is pretty cheap for the kind of car yet that depends on where you take it. If things go wrong some parts can prove expensive. Insurance is not cheap as you have found out and it is hard to be economical with petrol as you can't help but plant your foot to the floor at any given opportunity. This is purely my opinion, but i'm the kind of person that won't buy what I can't afford regardless of how much I want it. But choice is yours.

Yep to and from work during rush hour times. I have an auto so it's a little thirstier compared to the manual. I get around 130 miles on a tank around London thats £55 a tank. When I get out in say surrey where the traffic not as bad I get a lot more miles. I guess the way I drive it does not exactly help for fuel consumption. I gave my little honda civic hatchback runaround to my brother for his 21st at xmas. I'm regretting it now but it's too late to get it back:)
I might buy another one soon and use my rx7 a little less.

i have spoken to a few people who have single turbo 7's, can you buy these or are they converted, and also are they cheaper to insure and more economical? cheers
<--rYaN-->
27th March 2003, 04:12 PM
dont quote me on this but im pretty sure all 93-95 fds were all twin turbos, and a lot are converted to the single turbo setup by owners. However, i think, later models in japan were released as single turbos although im not sure about that, and they are a lot rarer and more expensive!
Bailey
27th March 2003, 04:26 PM
Ryan, what do you think about me getting a 7, would u advise me to?
<--rYaN-->
27th March 2003, 04:33 PM
well i dont think im really in the position to give advice to be honest.
I absolutely love my car but i have only had it 3 months. Lots of things can go wrong and if they do it will be probably one of the most expensive cars out there to get sorted. I have been lucky so far nothin serious has gone wrong so i cant really say.
Running costs are high, it needs regular maintenance, oil checks etc etc. so if you are willing to put all that effort in and have the money to back it, then i would say yes, if your scraping for cash to buy it then i would wait awhile till you have some spare because if something does go wrong then its best getting it sorted straight away before something major goes wrong. I wouldnt want you to lose you investment in it for that reason.
But i have never had as much fun in my life as i do when im driving an fd, i've had it 3 months and i still smile when i look out of the window at it and when i drive it.
I ask more experienced members who know a lot more than me about it though!! They know best!
Good luck!

Hi Bailey,
All rx7's have twin turbo's. Some owners change this to a single turbo setup. A single turbo is a modification so insurance will always be more expensive when mods are declared.
A bigger turbo will cause the mixture to be lean so more fuel would have to be added by means of an aftermarket ecu, so the more fuel you add to the mixture means a less economical rx7.
As far as whether you should or not is a personal choice, but only spend according to your budget. I am on my 3rd rx7 and am pretty sure I will always own one thta's how much I enjoy it.

another thing you might be able to help me with, what is the differnce between a 2dr and 3dr 7? which model has 4 seats?

28th March 2003, 12:03 PM
Hi Bailey,
As I mentioned before it is quite thirsty, but you have to bare in mind that it's 2.6 twin turbo. As far as people saying they are reliable or unreliable, their opinions are based on either owning there rx7 or what they have heard on the rumour mill.
I have owned 3 rx7's an E reg egi non turbo model, I had no problems at all with this car until I put injector cleaner in and it didn't run well after that but I did not havea chance to see what would occur as soemone wrote it off about a week later.
I then owned a H reg turbo II convertible, I had no issue whatsoever until it was time for engine rebuild and even then it was kind enough to go on me on my driveway.
I now have a 3rd gen May 2002 it has 33,000 miles on the clock the only issue I have had since owning it was a low idle when in gear(it's an auto) and would sometimes cut when idling in gear. I paid £65 pound to get it fixed that £65 included a compression test which was good, change of oil, and the time it took to diagnose the fault was an air con fuse that had blown.
So my experience is not a problematic one. In a sense a car is as problematic as to how well it's been maintained. I don't think the rx7 is a unreliable car apart from you need an engine rebuild every 60-70k or so, if it's been well maintained. If it's not been well maintained it can cost you an arm and a leg just as any other unmaintained car would.
Most rx7's have 2+2 seating with the exception of the type rz.
There is no difference between 2 dr & 3 dr it's just terminology soem call it 2 dr some call it 3 dr. What is your budget to get an rx7 ??

my budget is £8000, and i havee seen 2 possible cars. The first is a K reg with 31,000 kms on the clock,99 spec rear lights, turbo timer, 3 spoke light weight alloys and a mazda speed kit with the vents on the side panels, looks real nice, and its in a dark nay blue. It is from Optimum auto's and is priced at £7500, i have spoken to the guy and he said its been in the UK for 4 months and the engine has been rebuilt in Japan(sounds a bit dodgy) i asked him about the history, like has it been back for the recalls that went out and he said he was quite happy for me to check it out. The other is a 99 coupe in black, its got some aftermarket alloys, not sure what they are, a CAT 1 alarm, mazdaspeed exhaust system and with 49, 000 on the clock. This is priced at £7995 and is fairly close to where I live. what do you think?
bnaellis
28th March 2003, 03:46 PM
Hi Bailey,
The Kreg once engine rebult and only has 31,000 kms ? that's only 19,000 miles ?? Get him to clarify if it's 31,000kms on new engine or if it's actually 31,000 miles. Also If you like it ask if you can see the auction sheet it will state mileage and auction grade so you will know if it's been in an accident before.
The 99 spec for £7995. I find it hard to believe. The only possibly
reason it could be sold at that price is if the engine blown, or the owner has an i.q of -5000 maybe the number 1 fell off the window when you saw it or a miss print on a add. However if on the odd chance the seller does have an i.q of -5000 snap it up asap as that is a great deal.
What area do you live in ??

Not really it's just that engines don't normally go pop at 19,000 miles so it's interesting that it's got a new engine already with such low miles.

31K km on a 10 year old car seems a little low, but other than that looks good. Looks like the Advan wheels to go with the Mazdaspeed body kit.
Person choice is the spoiler is missing, doesnt make the car look right. But that is a personal thing.
Does it come with a service history, that is a major thing with these cars. You need to know that the car has been cared for.
