Hi Ryan you should have a f and l mark on the dipstick.
You fill it to the F. If memory serves me right and i'm not talking nonsense there should be a kind of bottleneck shape to the dipstick at the full mark.

cheers mate. drove it a bit hard last night and it kept going between the first mark and zero on the gauge which obviously cant be good so i just put half a bottle in for the time being, didnt really use the dipstick it was too dark to make anything out

the gauge on the dash is for oil levels isnt it? that kept going between the bottom line and the 1st one, never done that before its always been about half way, but after i put some oil back on it i think its over half way now. unless im completely misunderstanding what that dial does?

I think I know what he's talking about! He's talking about the 'ever accurate' oil pressure gauge!!

Ryan: The oil gauge is notoriously innacurate, everything can be completely fine and it can be reading zero or near enough!!
Hence the need to check the oil on the dipstick regularly, at least once a week. The gauge really isn't worth much at all, sometimes mine works fine and shows just under 4, other times it can be underneath the first line. You'll see if you need to top up from the dipstick :)

ahhhh thankyou, thats reassuring now, thought i had driven it too hard or something and it was a bit buggered lol.

and i have another prob dont know if anybody else is having, when accelerating quite hard the exhaust pops a lot, that doesnt bother me that much but the car feels like its stuttering when it does it, feels like the power is going on off on off, feels jerky which is a bit annoying, any1 have this prob and know what causes it???

cheers

When you picked the car up did it have a service first ?? Sounds like it might have a slight misfire, maybe the spark plugs are quite badly fouled, dodgy ht lead, does it have a aftermarket ecu ??
depends on what it sounds like it could scaringly be detonation.

well thats somewhat worrying.
it had a service not too long before i picked it up, plus a new engine about 3000 miles ago, its only just started doing this, so it could be the spark plugs, just sounds like really loud pops from the backbox, no where near the engine that sounds fine, also took a while to start it yesterday so that sounds like the sparks plugs??

well if it don't sound like it's coming from the engine it's not likely to be detonation then. What mods have you got on the car ??

it was advertised as having 3mm apex seals (whatever that means) and the full apex'i exhaust system and that was it. no upgraded ecu or anything yet

Where did you buy it ??
Hopefully you don't have a full apexi exhaust a syou would not be able to supply enough fuel, i.e running lean which = detonation which = broken seals 3mm or not. Are you sure it's not just a back box ? as some importers tend to exaggerate a bit.
If all the ehaust does is pop then that's normal but if you find that when it is popping your losing power too, and it feels jerky it and stutters it certainly sounds like detonation i.e not good.
If it is a complete exhaust system downpip midpip catback and a stock ecu then I would suggest getting an ecu asap and not to push it hard until then. Yet even better than that take it to a rx7 mechanic who can check and confirm what it is.

Ryan,

YES - DO NOT DRIVE YOUR CAR HARD IF IT IS DOING THIS. DO NOT EVEN LET IT COME ON BOOST! It could be detontation, but even if it is missing etc. get it sorted ASAP.

Check everything first, replace the spark plugs - visually check and ensure all wires are connected tightly etc. in and around the engine bay.

.ps The Oil Pressure gauge does play a pretty important part. Pressure is not the same as level. However, if there is no oil in the engine then there will be no oil pressure. But by that time your engine probably would have siezed. When idling the pressure will be low on the gauge, when revving the gauge should rise at the same time.

If the red Oil light comes on, on the dash - that can be pretty bad also (means it has run out of oil).

Always keep the oil between 3/4 and Full - check it every week!

As Brian has mentioned, get it to a rotary mechanic ASAP.

well that does make it easier. is it straight forward to program? and anybody have any price estimates inc fitting???

was thinking about getting it done at wgt auto developments in northwich but they dont list prices on the website

Prices range from £650 upwards. The offical importer of the Apexi is ReWorx in Portsmouth, but they charge £800 for the unit.

The HKS unit you asked about is the F-Con. At the moment you cannot purchase the software/hardware to map this system, and it only comes in Japanese!
