View Full Version : Advice needed! Brake pad renewal time!

This must seem a bit of an elementary question, but that's where I am at!
My rear discs need new pads (1982 Rx-7) and I'd like to replace them myself. I'm OK with tools and can follow instructions, but I know nothing at all about cars - well, almost nothing, anyway.
My Haynes manual says I need a special tool to turn something or other half way through the process. Is this something which I could make. Is it essential, in fact?
Reading the threads I've gathered that nobody likes Hawk pads and that some folk can see off a set of Mazda pads in a good race, but what sort should I get ?(or even "can I get?"). Then there's a mention somewhere that the brake fluid can boil ! Wow!
Is this 'angels fear to tread' territory or should I go ahead?
Any help, guidance, sympathy appreciated.

Just buy some long nose pliers from the market end cut them back abit, for winding the pistons back in.
For every day use over the counter parts Mazda or E.B.C.
Change the fluid any how if its old fluid it is cheap enough to flush
one bottle through first then leave the final lot in.
All the above less than £40.
IF your going racing some one else jump in.....

yep spot on,
standard pads should be fine on the road, especially on the rear as I find the rear end locks under braking and downshifting (if you don't heal toe the downshift which I don't as that requires a degree of co-ordination that I lack :) )

Thanks both of you, this sounds to be all the info I need and certainly it's enough to inspire confidence.
I won't be racing - just bumbling along at about Mach 0.0933 so that should suit me fine.
Off to the shops...........................

The site below relates to the FD model, but I think the caliper pad replace procedure is very close.

OK Fish - I had a quick glance but it's a long thread so I will go and have a good read at it.
Thanks a lot

Hello mmilner,
That sounds just fine. I guess it's the same design pad for all gen 1 rear discs? Do you have any idea what make they are? I've been warned off 'Hawk'.
My email is:
frank_gw3cnm@hotmail.com if you'd like to send me an address to send the loot to.
Thanks for that,
Frank

Unfortunately the email address is underlined and this obscures the underscore character between 'frank' and 'gw3cnm'
