Hi,

Im looking to track day my egi in the next few weeks and im just after some track day tips on the fc's as ive never had a rotary at a track day and don't know how they respond to reputed abuse lol?

I know theres the obvious things to look out for such as brake's,tyre pressure, fuel surge etc but im not that clued up on rx track days.

Any advice would be dandy.

Well like any car givce it a oil/filter change, check the water level maybe change it if its been in a while. Then Check the break disc's and pads. Make sure there is plenty of life left in them. Change the break fluid (this is a must really) get some decent fluid in there. Halfauds do a budget track type fluid. Anything else like fuel and air filter change (if your still running stock filter) will also be help the car. Oh have a look for leaks on your shocks too when you've get the wheels off. Lastly get some decent tyres on it!

Dont forget to let the engine cool down on idle after a session, thats just not for turbos. Also if you feel that the car is getting sloppy on the brakes then its a good sign that they have got too hot so ease of them and take it steady, maybe time to come into the pits. Dont run on less than 1/4 tank as severe hard cornering might starve the pump and lastly have some dam good fun !!!

Yeah good point that Pete. At cadwell last month (my first track day) I cooked my breaks within 4 laps. I was using them far too severley. I had to let them cool down for nearly an hour before I went back out on track. I would recommend staying out on track no longer than 10-15 mins in one go. Have 15 mins off minimum then go out again. I stayed out too long in the last half hour of the day. Maybe 20 mins or so and my car started spitting water out. I was lucky and noticed the temp gauge, I did a very slow cool down lap and went straight to the pits. After it had cooled down I filled it back up and its ok but it could easily have been the end of my engine. Like Pete has also said let your car idle when you come off the track just a few mins to let it cool down withthe water circulating, don't just turn it off.
Sorry to sound like doom and gloom, I don't mean to. Im sure you and your car will be fine. These are just my personal expeariences at my first track day.
Oh and you'll have a blast the cars are really chuckable! I can't wait for my next one.

excellent, like i say its my first track day so it will be an experience either way.Whats the db limit on exhausts for track days?? also were thinking on thruxton for our day,any good/bad experience's there??

It depends on the track. Cadwell was 105db which is good. Some are 95db. My car was between 98 and 103db with the bungs in the exhaust. The tester did say it only got to 103 cause it was popping a bit though! As you can see though it is something to watch out for. I was really worried about mine as I knew it was loud, and they don't give refunds if your too loud. I'd check what the db level is at the track you decide on going to before you book it if your worried.

Ooh not good news. Just had a look on Thruxton's site. It's a 90db limit :( I think that will rule out almost all rotarys that have a aftermarket exhaust.

Id have the gearbox & diff oil changed if clocked up a few miles. Also dont make the school boy error of putting the handbrake on when you get back to the pits! :Laugh

Here's the basic trackday advice sheet I knocked up for the group of us who went to Cadwell Park recently. It's primarily written from my (and other) experience of an RX-8, but it should be a good starting point.

yeah the egi is more or less a straight through now, even with the bung in it's still loud.Ill get her checked out before i pay out.

1/
What are the 13b's like for reputed abuse out on the track? i reguarlly take her too the red line but not for long periods like you would on a track and as ive gota get home in it i don't wana melt it lol.

2/
Gona hopefully be at a dwyb at santa pod soon and im just wondering how many sets of tyres i should take with me? Im not going to be shredding tyres left and right with power it has so would one set be enough fo a day?

3/
Also anyone else drifted an egi??? ive had mine sideways a few times but not over a great distance?

Your not gonna be holding it at red line even on a track. If your in the red line your passed the usable power and need to change gear. I wouldn't be worried about hitting the red line just holding it there. From my expeariance I hit the red line more on down shift rather than going up the gears.
As for the drifting side of things, I don't know. nover done a DWYB but let us know how you get on and some pic's would be nice. Oh would get 2 set of rubber to drift in though and a set for the road though. If you don't use a set then you'll always have another for next time!

If you do go to thruxton you'll have an ace time, I found it to be a nice quick flowing track when I done the single seater experience thing there. Don't recall it being too bad on the brakes either to be honest as it's not exactly twisty. Good luck anyhow

For the drift day, you'd probably get through one maybe two sets of NEW tyres. Though if you are using part worns a lot more. I'd also suggest going without a bonnet for the drifting if you don;t have a water and oil temp gauge.

Other than that have fun. Thruxton is a good circuit, i wouldn't personally take an egi round there and its more big sweepers than tight twisty stuff. Its pretty fun in an rx8 though so you should still have a blast.

Good luck!!

cool, yeah i was abit worried about the cooling side of things when it come to drifting a car, doe's it harm if u ocassionally run over 8,000rpm on a standard set up?? ive heard the water pump can cavitate?? and yeah ill try and get some footage of my drifto attempts!

yup, probs a good idea to get an underdrive pully if you plan to spend alot of time passed 6000 rpm
