Boo hiss! A girl! Hello all, I currently drive a Lexus IS200SE Auto (old sportier shape) and have never been even the slightest bit tempted away from it when I've been in BMWs, Mercs or Audis or anything, I was happy until I got a ride (not a rude one) in my friend's boyfriends RX8. I fell in love - with the car not the boy and have really got the bug! Anyway, I love the look inside and out of the car but have really got used to Auto and keep hearing snippets about semi-automatic RX8s or tiptronic RX8s etc etc but guess they aren't UK made? Can anyone give me a quick rundown of what is available and the pros and cons of having an import car? Any info would be appreciated. Looking to spend £8k-£10k only if I can? I haven't got a better half at the mo so thought this would be the best place to start to get the lowdown, ie from real experts?
Cheers x

Thanks Lisa, I was probably making very big assumptions but did think i was probably entering a very male dominated world here lol. I'll take advice from anyone, male or female.

Welcome to MRC:Thumbsup!,

We welcome all here so you will have no worries here,

Yes there are auto RX-8's out around the world with a few imports here plus one Mazda dealer brought a batch of 50 in and sold them in 2004.

I will say though that unless you only have an Auto license I would advise against the Auto as it will not be the car you had the ride in that impressed you so much,

On any car with an Auto gear box the power from the engine is less because the Auto box uses up more power to make it work.

Somebody I know in America was invited by Mazda to test drive two prototype RX-8's around a track called Laguna Seca,

He explained to me that he drove a six speed RX-8 first and liked it, then next up was an Auto RX-8 but after one lap he came into the pits convinced it was broken as it was so slow compared to the other car.

The car was O/K, it was the fact that the RX-8 Auto has not only a lower powered engine but also that the Auto box sucks the life out of the engine!

Hope this helps

Hi Angela,

Yes MRC is male dominated but us girliies can still hold our own - and we can always do with some more female imput. :cool

You're right - auto RX-8 have never been available in the UK. I have seen a couple of imports - very similar spec, the only real way you can tell (from the outside) is they have smaller wheels.

No idea about importing or the costs so as Lisa says I sure one of our male experts will be able to offer some advice.

Edit: just realised it took me so long to post last night that Clive got in before me - and I agree with him, I've never driven an auto RX-8 but I don't think it would be anywhere near as good.

:spank:Nono! We could debate for hours about the pros and cons of RX-7's and RX-8's. The fact is, we all love rotary engined cars on this forum, as opposed to those piston powered things, so let's just not have that debate. I'd love to have an RX-7, but RX-8's are more practical for day to day use, if you need 4 proper seats!

Booo! Hisss!!!! girl girl girl :E Welcome to the club! :wave

RX-8's are more practical for day to day use, if you need 4 proper seats! You are so right! I used my 7 for two years daily and it was a real bind when ever i had to take more than 1 person anywhere. or any size of luggage. :Giggle (ontop of the £70 fuel bill every 250 miles)

I don't think auto's would be a good idea if you could live with a manual? why not see if a mazda dealer will let you have a play with a car?

may as well say hi before i get boo'd and labbeled a sexist pig
i think you should go with a rx8 as im guessing you dont know much about cars so the 8 will be less hassle and easier for you to maintain and an all round safer car for you to drive plus you can get 3 of your friends in it

And you can get one in your favourite colour, they say the rear view mirror is great for putting on make-up too. Not sure how many cuddly toys will fit on the parcel shelf though?

The 7 is an angry beasty of a car compared to the 8. I've had mine for two years now, I did 50,000 trouble free miles then it got a new engine (under extended warranty) and it's brilliant. It's much friendlier than the 7 and has a decent boot and four seats. It's not as quick in a straight line but it's so friendly that it rarely matters.

First off Hi and Welcome :WaveBye

People may dis the 8 compared to the 7 but many people who have tried the 8 have been surprised just how good they are. Out of the box they're a great car and will more than hold their own with a standard 7 it's just that many 7s are now far from standard.
As for an auto I'd stay away from it but if you must I know TW Whites (http://www.twwhiteandsons.co.uk/) import quite a lot from Japan and will always have some in stock although they don't appear to be that near you but it might be worth getting yourself down to them and having a test drive in both an auto and a manual 8 and comparing the difference for yourself.

Hello guys, further to my post about wanting to buy an auto RX8 I thought I would update you all. I bit the bullet and I bought a 2006 RX8 PZ in Black. Ditched the auto idea in the end thanks to all your advice. Cheers x

You going to post pics of it ? :cheers

I do like the shape of the '8' - there are a couple of them at work - one two ladies drivers - one in black like you'rs, and the other is that nice dark metallic grey - Titanium I think ?

What is this "girl" thing that people keep saying?

I keep hearing it when people go "oh you've got a girl's name" but still don't know what one is :(

Welcome anyway :D To post pics you need to upload them to somewhere like Photobucket, or find a friendly member who will host and post for you :)

Hi & belated Welcome!

Glad you got an '8 - and went the best way with a manual, not to mention a model with uprated handling in the PZ; you'll find the drive a lot more rewarding :chat

As for uploading pics, this can be done from the 'manage Attachments' button near the bottom (of the page), whilst replying to a post... otherwise you can put them up on something like Google Picasa, Flickr, Photobucket etc. web-site, and add the links in between "" & "" tags.

If that still sounds uber geek to you, sorry -- I'm sure somebody less geeky than myself will be around :)

As Sean says if you put them up on something like Photobucket or Picasa you should be able to link them on here. Most photo sites give you the code to out in your post.
