I was fed up with belt slip and failure with the stock set up and even tried the twin belt set up which never really worked much better so i thought i would try and convert my Turbo II engine to Serpentine (aka micro V) belt like most new cars use, including the FD. The water pump will perform better also if the belt isnt slipping.

You can buy a kit from the states but its a lot of money.

I'm not saying its easy for every one to do but just that it can be done on a budget.

You will need a 13b Cosmo RE water pump pulley, this is because its set back from the mounting point like a turbo II. This fits straight on the T II water pump. You then need an FD or Cosmo crank pulley, you will need to file one of the bolt holes slightly but this isnt a problem as it centres itself on the front hub and not the for 6mm bolts that are screwed into the hub. Dont forget to accurately transfer your timing marks. The Crank pulley will fit straight on the FC front hub but you will need to space it forward about 3 or 4 mm, it will still sit on the lip on the hub, this puts it in line with the w/p pump pulley.

You then need to replace the alternator pulley with a micro v belt pulley. You will need one that is stepped forward by about 4 mm to line up with the other 2 pulleys. You could use an FD pulley but you will need to move the alternator forward a little by removing some of the rear of the bracket on the engine. I didnt want to do this so i popped along to my local alternator remanufacturer and rifled through his box of pulleys and found one that went straight on and was stepped far enough forward to be able to leave the alternator in place. You need a 15mm hole in the pulley.

I will take some pics this evening and show you.

As said, not a mod everyone will want to do but it can be done. The whole conversion cost me £5.50 for the new micro v belt
