am slightly confused as to which mine is as it has s4 body parts yet it is registerd as an '89 which is s5 territor. did i read that there was an inbetween phase with some s5 engine parts on late s4's?

i'm not too hot on EGi's but from memory, the rear spoiler would indicate the later model, i know they didnt sell S4 turbos in england. I dont know if there are any engine differences on the egi's of different years. I'm sure some of the more dedicated 2nd gen enthusiasts will be able to offer more help.

Well most of your body panels are S4 but dont forget the car is 20 years old and people can mess with these cars a fair bit. Just to confuse you my Cab is a 1988 S4 JDM. Its now a S5 with S5 trim and UK wiring. The engine is also S5 and comes from the later model.
Never trust whats on the tin.

All UK N/A cars (EGi's) are S4's
all uk TII's are S5's
The spoiler (if it came with the car) suggests you have a later S4, so you should have 5 stud wheels

that sounds about right but i thought all uk 2nd gens had studs, only early US cars had 4 studs

Mines an S4 reg'd in late 86 i think, You can tell by the rx7 sticker on the back and tiny spolier.

The font has had ftp lenses covered up by a previous owner! So its not how it looke dout the factory thats for sure!

Also the engine is quite empty compared to the 89 egi i also have!
There's no p/s, air pump or cruise control.

thanks for the replys guys, i guess its just a late s4 model with some s5 bits, the car is unmodified and the high level s5 is standard and it has 5 stud wheels. not sure how i could check whether the engine is s4 or s5 though

Bigger spoilers came on the later S4's. Your's looks like an s4 egi to me.
TBH shep your car looks like an S4 to me. If its got an S5 engine you'd be looking at around 170 bhp opposed to 140.
If you get some engine bay pics we can confirm. I think the S5 N/A's look slightly different under the hood. Look on www.rx7club.com for more info as the US got N/A S5's

thats why i wanna know if i have 146 or 160bhp :) i agree with thinking its just a late s4 tbh. (looks identical to your daily)

mmmmhmm that looks like the S4 motor to me.
You'd have one rare car if you managed to get a s5 N/A motor.
bah, almost identical, i grabbed some S5 lights :P

Another way is to have a look at the ECU,see which version it is and also what the plug connections are like. They differ between the S4 and S5 pretty much throughout the car but definately at the ECU. The S5 ones tend to have much smaller pins whereas the S4 had a mix of larger and smaller pins in the plugs.
The only pic I have is the door ones and are in the side footwells.
The left hand one was JDM S4 and the right hand pic S5 UK

Mazda also offered an optional aero kit so the spoilers prob wont give you a good indication. As pete said have a look at the ECU connectors to be certain, most peeps (excluding pete lol) prob wouldnt change the wiring loom.
