exhaust silencer?

whats the purpose of this silencer? had to have it fitted for the mot as there wasnt one there before! now in the near future i will be looking at getting an aftermarket exhaust which wont have the hangers for this stupid little silencer??

No purpose what so ever apart from a little silencing and to carry the fumes to the rear of the car. Thats a standard exhaust and to be honest I have never had any problems with an aftermarket exhaust which has no centre box or the rest of the exhaust bits as in your case.. As long as the system is not loud then it does not matter the make up of the exhaust too much, as long as it does its job.

grrr had to pay 125 quid for it just so it would pass the mot!
