have had a little serch and cant find anything that can help me. i am fitting in an aftermarket stereo and have hooked up the live, ign live and earth but cant for the life of me find the speaker wires! now the original stereo used a large cable housing around 10-11 wires one of which i have found to be the remote aerial, so i assumed these would be front and rear =ve's and -ve's but they're not! any ideas?

check you have speakers in the holes first thing then check the remaining wires have no power out puts with and without ignition on then use a square 9 volt battery to pop /test all the remaining wires can take a little time pair them up and go through different combinations till you hear a pop then lable that up thats a pair repeat till you have fronts and rears job done
failing that wire new cable to everything

Quite common for some cars to have the wires cut, dont know why they do it but they do. If you take your centre console out you might have a better idea of what has gone on but all the FC's have the wires regardless. If its been butchered then its easier to install new thicker wires as the originals are rather thin. In the drivers and passenger side kick panels are the green block connectors,if you can locate the spealer wires there then at least you can tap into it there. To run new cables through the door hinges etc is a right pain in the butt and time consuming job to do it properly.
Heres the diagram for you.

Well they must be there for the old one to work, think you are missing something thats right in front of your eyes. Have a look at the diagram for the wire colours but lets not forget that your new unit might be faulty, can happen.

have taken the unit out of my golf so i know it works. am very confused and must be missing something!:3Confused checked the colour of the wires coming from the speakers but unfortunately they dont seem to correlate to any behind the centre console

didnt the fc headunits have like a pre-amp to them?
dunt sound right to have a poxy / stock headunit to run 6 speakers (2 in rear, 2 in door and 2 undeer dash)
IMO just rewire it and chuck in an amp for good measure :)

would make sense if they did have a pre amp as the huge cable on the back of the old unit is labled 'to amp'.
really cant be botherd to run new cables!!! will have another look about later today and report back! probly with the reply 'they were right in front of me all along!':rollin

if it is running though an amp you may find the speaker wires run to where the amp was like in the boot or under the seat. If not at the head unit you should have had two (brown or black i think) connectors which used to fit in the old head unit. One would have 12v, GND and Memory 12v and a few others but the other shoud have all the pairs of speaker cables. They will be all the same thickness and the pairs should be colour coded with a stripe to indicate +/- for each speaker.

oh.. rx7pat reminded me of sth.. if the headunit went to pre-amp then that signal would be a low level output which would not be able to power the speakers.
best to extend wires from the pre-amp to the headunit speaker out.

Pre-amp is on the drivers side usually just behind the dash speaker if you have one.

it might just be a case of the ign live and live being switched over at some point. i found out that hard way when i got my fc. jus swap them over n try. save u wire-in new wire.
im not sure about uk fc's but jap fc's lots of the switches are on the negative feed if it makes any scense? )bit random but might come in handy in future lol)
