hey
ive been having loads of idle probs etc with my 2nd get, and finally traced it to the intake manifold, so got the bits from mazdarotaryparts(thanks clive :) )
but i think the turbo will need a rebuild/replace. im no expert, but theres a small amount of up and down movement, maybe about a mm, it doesnt touch the outside of the turbo tho. theres no back and forward movement at all and when i pulled the intake hose off there was about a tea spoon of oil sitting in the turbo.
sound like its on its way out?
oh it did make good boost, about 3/4 up the stock gauge.
thanks

The stock turbos have journel bearings, meaning that the shaft spins in oil, so as the engine was off it should move a bit :)
what PSI/BAR did you make? the OEM boost guage is useless, it doesn't even accuratly tell you when you are on boost

no idea, i never linked up an aftermarket gauge :( it pulls to below 45 mmhg, no idea why its not psi :p ) i think thats about 7 psi, so should be making full boost, and tails off towards red line( i think).
i didnt think there was a problem with it untill i had a fiddle with it :( :spank
but now its off if it needs done i'd rather do it now that take it off again :(

I got mine fully rebuilt by universal turbo, get full 360 degree thrust bearings if you get it rebuilt, its a bit more, but well worth it as it will extend the life of the turbo and just generally be a much more responsive turbo :)

how much was that, if you dont mind me asking?
i was also thinking of getting the compressor ugraded for an H_trim, i was considering doing it myself ... all depends on the prices i suppose
there does look to be a score on the intake side, so i think it will need rebuilt ;)

These turbos do have a fair amount of side play anyway and nothing to worry about. When they start to smoke then shell out for a rebuild, they really are quite a solid bit of kit.
If you buy the T3 rebuild kit you can rebuild yourself but mark all the positions of shaft and housings etc and generally it will not need a balance. DIY for about £50.

Well all in, full rebuild, porting, vat and delivery cost me £480, which may seem a lot, but when I sell it I will get a chunk of that back, plus it won't explode when I boost it to 0.9 bar lol :)

lol, no i wont be paying 500 quid for a rebuild! im waay too skint :) definetly a d.i.y job then!
the turbo doesnt smoke as far as i can tell, however there is a fair amount of oil on the air filter, and there was oil sitting on the inside lip of the turbo beside the intake compressor wheel.
the compressor wheel can touch the edge if pushed reasonably hard on the intake side, but its a fair distance away on the exhaust side.. however i'd imagine it'll tighten up with oil running through the bearing then?
i was thinking of upgrading the compressor wheel if it wasnt too expensive when i rebuilt it, and a 360 degree thrust bearing since that seems to be the way to go. if i change the compressor it'll need balanced then i assume?
tough choice, i think i'll need a 2nd opinion from a mechanic then, unless there are any more hints??

I had to get a full rebuild, the previous owner wrecked all the vac systems, so some were venting to air, meaning my BOV couldn't work properly, meaning I got flutterdump and compressor surge wrecking all the bearings :(

well i wouldnt mind 10-14psi of boost, so maybe its best to get it done now anyway?

are there turbos from any other models of car that will fit as a decent upgrade over standard
and i dont run a dump valve as i hate the chavvy noise they make

if you want to upgrade the turbo check this site out...

L18M i was thinking about a used one, but i think the rebuild kits is around £60, and for £150-£200 i could have an upgraded/hybrid d.i.y turbo that should last a long time :) unless anyone thinks thats way off price wise?

ok im sure the blade has a touch too much play in it(confirmed by a mechanic), its not bad and would give me a few thousand miles, there is a small score on the casing too, so its out now so im going to rebuild it.
so im going to port the wastegate while its out, how much porting is needed to run 12 psi? as much as this?
http://fc3spro.com/TECH/HOWTO/KWG/kwg12.jpg
and is it the garrett T3 rebuild kit thats needed? does this come with a 360 degree thrust bearing?
im assuming upgrading to a v-trim wheel would require internal work too?
thanks

when porting the wastegate you will see its kinda obvious when its in front of you but you will see where the wastegate pennie contacts the housing just open thtat up but leave a small amount to make the seal

You have to be careful when upgrading to a 360 thrust plate as some are screwed down,a standard TII turbo will not have these screw holes and will have to be drilled and tapped if you want a professional job. This stops the thrust plate from moving. I have several of the kits and none I have will do the job on a standard turbo so you have to make sure you buy the correct kit, they are perfect for general replacement of the journal bearings and seals etc but that 360 bit might need a bit of engineering dependent upon the kit. Always buy quality and not the cheapest going.

The problem you will have with the stock turbo is that its on a H18 flange, meaning there aren't really any turbos that will fit right in, Prof has doing a hybrid and bolted a larger compressor on the front with nice big gains :) perhaps PM him about it.
Remember to do all the support modifications like fueling, cooling, braking and mapping before you go past the stock boost, most rotaries die cause they either run lean or overheat

ok h18 flange ?? thats a new one too me the questionis are there any other cars that people kno of that use the same flange as there might be a cheaper alternative to be used as an upgrade
