Hello out there all Rotary Boffins,
I'm after some advice and hope someone can help me.
I'm looking for a 3rd Gen. Jap Import but am having some trouble in deciding what to go for.
I want the car to be sharp and responsive with hair raising performance so, is the Type R the one to go for, as it seems you get so much more for your money with the Touring model.
Does the leather interior hold up well in these cars?
My budget is about 12K, so I'm considering getting a really good early model as opposed to a dodgy late one.
Any advice on what to buy and where from would be greatly appreciated.
Do the early models go as well as the later ones?
Many thanks.

hi
Im pretty sure that the touring model was only released in the americain market, however the type-r is easily avalible from Japan as is the rs, although the spec is quite low on these models next to the R1/R2 or uk spec.
I haven't heard any bad stories about the leather seats in the 7, however they dont hugg as well as suede as thy are smoother and more slippy, but thats the same on every car!
EVERY 7 HAS HAIR RAISING PERFORMANCE, HANDELING AND LOOKS:D
there is a difference between the different models, rx-7s made in 94 have around 245-255bhp, 95-96 have around 265bhp and after that they have 280bhp. So yes there are differences in performance and power. However older cars can be brought up to the same power as the newer models quite easily.
Although the older models look awsome the body upgrades on 98+ make a noticable difference.
yes you could get an exellent early model over a later one for that money. You also could have a car sourced for you, just tell the company what your looking for and they should find it for you, they could even get car better than you expected.
an exelent 94-96 should cost £8500-£10500
an exellent 98+ ariund £15000
Have you looked at a nice uk spec car?? there higher spec(as i said) and hold their value better.
as for importers
www.neweraimports.com
they seem to be the best i can see so far, i think BNA_ELLIS has his own import company, you could ask his advice.

As richard said there is no such thing as a slow 3rd gen rx7 regardless of model. The touring models were the same horsepower as the type r 255bhp. It's just a case of different packages really. Why do you say a good early model rather than a dodgy late one ?
If anything the later ones would be better than the earlier ones.
What you pay for say a 94 or 96 rx7 depends on the model the mileage and the condition. if you want a good condition low mileage car, you have to pay more for it as rx7's along with skylines in Japan tend to hold there price pretty well because they are popular out there.
Also it's only up until 95 that the touring models have all the options that you like from 96 onwards, they no longer have red/black leather interior, or bose hifi, cruise control. They just kept the sunroof and climate control. Also after 93 they were only in automatics, 91-93 cars had both manual and auto.

Thanks for your reply guys,
The reason I say 'Dodgy late one' is because I'm dubious of whether I could find a good late one for the money I can afford.
As an earlier thread stated - the engine may need 'refreshing' at around 60K, which is where they seem to be in my price range.
I don't want to spend in excess of 10K only to have the engine rebuilt, I could do that with a car for 7K or less.
Jimmy's is the place I'm considering buying my first 7 from, although they tend to be 92-94 models at a higher price than most at this age they are fully rebuilt with low mileage.
The issue of interior and exterior paint chipping is a concern though.
I was unaware that the Touring model was automatic after 93, that settles it for me - type R it is.
Thanks again.

If you check out the following web site this company always has some nice RX7's in stock.
www.japtech.co.uk
I bought my car from them, its been excellent, and come with a very good warranty. The car was reasonably priced as well.
