Planning to pick up a Gen 1 next week (project car between myself and a mate) we were wondering how easy it is to fit the Gen 2 13b engine into a Gen 1? As the car we are collecting has engine probs and if it needs a re-build, may as well go for more power! :D
Help!!!

if its that left hand drive one it may already have a 13b in it
Difficult to tell by the pics though as its had a lot of european parts retrofitted to it (mirrors, lights, wings ....) so Identifying it may be difficult.
If it is a true US spec car it could have allsorts of goodies on it (depends on the spec) ... LSD, Powersteering .... etc.

that's the one, we are going to collect next w/end so I'll b able to let you know what is going on then. Did the US cars have 13bs then?

only the GSL-SE's ... it'll be obvious if it is as it'll have a fuel injected 13b under the bonnet rather than a blue aircleaner hiding a carb'ed 12a.
The brake cooling vents in the front spoiler suggest its a GSL-SE

in answer to your question should the engine be knackered, a 13b will fit straight into the first gen, it will even mount to the stock gearbox or you have a TII gearbox. I had a TII engine in my first gen, with the gearbox, it went like stink!!!

the engine mounts don't just bolt in and the sump won't clear either. There have been a few threads about this before but ...
The 2nd gen 13b's aren't mounted on the front cover like the 12a, so you have to either mod a 12a front cover to suit a 13b or do some major work and fabricate new engine mountings. then the 13b is some 20mm longer than a 12a too so you need to modify the front engine mounting too.
The 2nd gen 13b sump will not clear a 1st gen crossmember either.
all the parts are available to make it fit but they are fairly rare and hard to get hold of (GSL-SE parts from the US) as they are sought after by many a 12a owner in the states.

According to Pip SE sump pans are readily available and you just 'bend' the cross member. The 12A front cover is a bolt up item IIRC.

Theres a guy in the states with a full 2nd gen subframe, suspension and struts bolted into his 1st gen ... looked like a fairly simple swap, but you would need to find a LHD 2nd gen for starters.

hi,
just use ur original front cover for the 13b and you can buy a rx7 13b sump for the rx7 s1-3 have part number somewhere if you need it,
rough way is slot front engine cross-member that bolts to front cover and slot the car cross-member and youll get your 20mm
then your exhaust need slight mods like length.
note 12a/13b non turbo flywheels different diameter than rx7 s4/5/6 etc
hope helps

the 2nd gen 13b's are side mount engines so no mounting points on the front cover to bolt your engine mounting too. Hence why you need to change somthing to make it fit

What I do is to weld two blocks to the 13B front cover, then bolt the 12A mounting bar to them. This way,a 12A sump will fit,if some of the bolt holes are redrilled.

sorry prob didnt explain correctly but.......use original front cover of 12a motor, fit to 13b motor not using original 13b front cover and use rx7 s1-3 13b sump both bolt straight to 2nd gen motors :) then you have the same mount studs for x-member.
then slot both x-members for extension of 13b
:)
