Hello folks

Tell me, can normally aspirated 12A's be turbocharged without spending silly money?

Cos im gonna have to rebuild it some time...

Well, the obvious way would be by using an Elford kit or similar, which replaces the inlet manifold and "just" adds a turbocharger (Garret T3) and an SU carb. This is probably the simplest setup and you get a fairly decent power gain from it (something like 165 BHP). However due to the nature of the kit there isn't really a way to plumb in an intercooler.

AFAIK if you desperately want to add an intercooler that'll be a completely different can of worms as you'll most likely have to convert to FI, plus most of the plumbing would have to be custom-made. IOW it's going to be real cheap.

Probably the best course of action is to find an Elford kit and get the engine rebuilt so it'll take higher boost. The latter probably means low compression rotors though, and that's another set of parts that are fairly rare...

I've been offered a turbo, surge chamber & BOV off a 13b, but you're right - it will require FI + computer etc.

Probably still do it when & if the parts become available.

Where would you get an Elford kit?

I'm very new to the rotary club.

Mind you, got to replace all the suspension bushes first....

Speak to tim at RX Motors, i had an elford turbo first gen, if your engine needs rebuilding then i would either get tim to put a 12a turbo engine which he gets from japan, it uses a blow through turbo and basic fuel injection system but gets good results. (and you can use an intercooler) They didnt use the setup over here but tim has put a few in 1st gens. Or you can do what i did and put a 13b turbo II engine and gear box in and get instant 5 second 0 - 60 times..... :) Tims good at things like that as he has soooooo many parts.

Like the sound of that. How hard is it to fit a genII engine & box?

Is the steering any better on genIIs?

Mines :censored::censored::censored::censored::censored::censored::censored: heavy.

Mind you i now strongly suspect it needs all new suspension bushes & a steering overhaul.....
