I'm very likely to be buying a '97 RX-7 RS-R soon so I shopped around for insurance, one of which was Tesco. I'm 29, have 3 points (sp30) and 7 yrs no-claims. The car will do around 9000 miles a year, and they quoted me £576. I thought that couldn't possibly be right so I phoned them up and explained it was an import etc etc but they twice insisted all the details were correct (guy said something about putting all rx-7's in one band?). Does that sound a bit cheap to anyone tho? The current owner of the RS-R is in his 30's and pays about a grand. Any opinions?

Sounds far too cheap to me - still as long as they have all the right info go for it.
To give you an idea of other ppl's experiences check out the 'insuring your rotary' posts.

I agree with John, far too cheep.
But as you said, you called them and told them it was an import. I presume that by your 'etc etc' you will have made sure they have it down as a Mazda RX7 Twin Turbo 1997 imported from Japan. If this is agreed then you have every right to hold them to that quote.
This actually happened to a friend of mine. Got a quote from Tesco then called back a few days later to take it out only to be told they had got it wrong and the quote should be about $500 more. Shame for Tesco though, as they gave him the quote and he told them the truth they had to houner it.
You have the quote, you told the truth. I think it would be there problem. As long as the details on the policy come through are correct then you'll be fine.
Think I'll call Tesco's tomorrow as my insurance is due very soon.

That's the strange thing. They've listed the car as an 'RX-7 pre 3/87' - but he insists this is the correct (and only) code for the car and he acknowleged he was aware it's a '97 Jap import worth £12k. As I said I've had this confirmed twice now... I've had four online quotes and two telephone quotes all giving me the same answer...

thats why then , pre reg change '87 would be a 1st gen rx7. It is in no way correct. its should be insured as a >'92

Yes, you're right of course, but i've tried to point this out to them twice and they are insisting this is their internal code for all rx-7's - and in the next breath quoting "1997 Mazda RX-7 import". It does obviously sound wrong but they are quite insistent they know the model (they also have the full reg. number). I'm not sure what to do here - If I went for it could they turn around in a month's time and say, 'sorry, we were wrong - another grand please'?

Ok mystery solved. I phoned them up a third time this morning querying the online quote I gave them and explained (again) that the model's wrong. This guy at least knew what he was doing, put in the correct model, and came back with a price of £1330. Not brilliant but not the end of the world either.

Hey, Maybe worth a look for those of you with more than 1 car to insure.... I just had a quote from a company called Tradex, they do policies for traders, enthusiasts, importers, ice cream men(!), taxi drivers and loads more. I wanted to insure my 2002 Spirit R, 2 MX5's and my every day Citroen ZX diesel. They gave me a quote of £1312 fully comp with an excess of £250. Not bad for all 4. There is no windscreen cover included (£25+VAT extra per car, £300 claim limit) and each car must be fitted with an immobiliser. This was done as an enthusiast policy, the nice lady told me you really need 3 or more cars to take it out. I think they will do it with 2 cars though, she was just looking at the more cost effective option for me.
I am 29 with full no claims and an SP30 last year, another in 2000.
Maybe of some use....
Mark.

Tesco messed up my quote they told me £1900 @20 with 2yrs ncb so i thought great!! brought the car then phoned to accept and some guy said they made a mistake and it should be £3300 but i argued for 20-30mins and got it for £1900:D . Not looking forward to next year now though!!
