Are any Norton bikes coming to "ROTORSTOCK"?
I hope so because it would be great to hear some of them going up the strip.
Kind regards
Carl

Hi Carl, ermm, very difficult to gauge numbers so far. I plan to be there, so thats one! I hope to take my bike up the strip, its mechanically standard but with a race-rep exhaust, sadly with the ejector pipe system not connected, but it should sound interesting even if its not startlingly quick.
David who runs the Rotary (motorcycle) Owners Club (and owns two DKW's, two Nortons, a Suzuki RE5, an RX7, an NSU RO80 and a rotary engined lawnmower!!!) will be putting a bit about Rotorstock in the next issue of the 'Epitrochoid' club magazine and ive emailed Alan of the Norton Rotary Enthusiasts Club about it so hopefully it will be in the next newsletter.
I have also put it on the Norton Rotary web forum. I will try to see if i can get any feedback from there.
Looking forward to it, see you all there.

Hi Norton,
I reckon you ought to connect up the ejector pipe system.
On trck there is NO noise limti.
It would be great to see as many as possible.
I reckon that if we talk to the powers that be that we could get any rotary bike into the event for the cheaper price.
What do the Moderators think?
Kind regards

Thats cool with me.
We probably cant run bikes with cars though, and its something to bear in mind that on RWYB days at pod people hate the changeover where the bikes go on for seemingly ages. Still, im sure the bikers dont like the cars justas much!

Not a simple job, fairly major changes have to be made inside the engine re-routing the oil/air flow and you have to junk the oil metering system and switch to mixing the oil and petrol together in the fuel tank. Also the SU carbs get swopped for normal ones.
Also, the bike has a typically 'early 1980s' very narrow rear tyre and its a struggle not to spin it with the power its got.
The White and Pink Streetfighter in the piccies has it all connected up but its got a nice big fat back tyre.

Hi Norton,
I remember now about the work involved.
that pink bike was in a mag a year or so ago.
Do you think the guy that owns it would bring it along?
How many do you think could come?
Kind regards
Carl

I will ask him, he uses it in sprint racing (Blackpool Sprint, Thundersprint etc). Hes a bit pre-occupied with having recently moved house at the moment.
I realistically dont think we will get many bikes up there unfortunately, so many events to go to, so little time.

Saturday and Sunday are the modified Nitrous festival,Monday is Rotorstock.
All 3 days are RWYB but on the monday it is only for Japanese engined cars, and of course Rotary engined bikes, and Mazda's of any description.
Saturday and Sunday anyone can come.
I am pretty sure we can get anyone in for the event that has a rotary engined bike for the same lower price that anyone with a Mazda car will get in.£14.00.
The track is going to be properly prepared for this event so expect some quick times.
Kind regards

If we have any Rotary Bikes that wish to go up the strip on the Monday we will happily make a gap for them to run.

Errm, forgive the blonde moment... ok i admit it, its not just a 'moment', its my normal confused state!... Is it 14-00 special entry price for Rotaries PLUS 15-00 to run on the strip?
I cant imagine its 14-00 entry plus 1-00 = total 15-00 to use the strip...... or is it?.......naaah, cant be, can it?
How do you get the 14-00 price when you turn up on the gate? Is there a funny handshake? or do i say Clive sent me? Will i have to re-badge the Norton as a Mazda? or cover the Union Jack stickers up with Japanese flags?

Gota be the "Mazda" badges
to get in l'm afraid. ;) :rollin :rollin :rollin :rollin :rollin
If just a couple of you wished to run l would try and get it where these were hopefully classed as "demo" runs and would cost you nothing as this would constitute an added attraction.

Well, ive got some times now. Having never done drag racing before i took my 20 year old Norton rotary to The Speedfreaks ball at Santa Pod this weekend and did eight runs down the strip. The 85bhp police bike i have was tested in 1982 at 13.5 seconds for the quarter mile and mine has a bog standard engine, carbs and air filter but i figure that the free flowing exhaust ive had added to it should have pushed power up to about 90bhp and mine should be a bit lighter than the origional 260 kilos. Only problem is that my tacho doesnt work so i have to try to guess when its getting close to the limiter. So, here are the results...
Run 1- 13.660 / Run 2- 13.136 / Run 3- 13.341 / Run 4- 13.028 / Run 5- 13.039 / Run 6- 13.492 / Run 7- 13.001 aaaarrrrggghhhh!! so close!.../ Run 8- 12.963 YES! into the 12's. :D T.S. 105 mph.
The one eighth of a mile time was 8.36 seconds at 86 mph.

I hope you did and some more Nortons rotaries come to rotorstock too.

Of course, Geoffs bike should be quite a bit quicker than mine with 130 bhp on tap!! especially over the second eighth of a mile section were i expect to get left behind.

It should be even better if hes finished building his new racetrack only exhaust which will dispense with the 'silencer' box under the engine! should get some good flames then!

12.96 quarter, slow by todays standards but hey, ive just been looking at a book on old 'superbikes', turns out my old 588cc Norton would have beat none other than the legendary Laverda Jota 1000 (which was in production at the same time) and which would have 'only' managed a 13.05.

We were really impressed with how friendly and welcoming you RX owners were, thanks for a great day. On our last run of the day we both posted our best ever times of... me 12.431 at 109.63 and Geoff (having finally persuaded it to run on both rotors) 11.972 at 117.12 Two happy chappies! :D :D

Hee, Hee... Thanks guys
It was the first time i had heard Geoffs bike on the straight through pipe, he has only just made it. It was ever so slightly loud wasnt it? I thought mine was loud but i couldnt hear it next to Geoffs. Lovely sound though, not unlike the works racers. :)
