In reply to Mike LMR's request heres a few pics of my various 1000/1300's - sorry about the quality, they're scans.
Here's a pic from the '94 Wexford rally - unfortunately I rolled this particular car on a road event about a year later.

This car is where it all started for me - we won the Welsh under 1300 and novice championship in it in 89/90- unfortunately it rusted away( we've all been there!)

BTW you may just be able to make out a roll cage in both these cars - its an RX3 coupe Safety Devices one which fitted quite well without any mods
And finally my current car. Mods being done at this moment in readiness for a year of road rallies, sprints and hillclimbs and hopefully a couple of (mazdarotaryclub?) track days.

I would love to hear from anyone who owns or knows of any 1000/1300's.
Cheers,
Rich;)

hmm, love the 1300's, I have two :D
pity I'm in australia though, I have also owned around 7 others previously, anyways, my daily car is still 1300 powered, and my project is awaiting the 12A to be refitted, after the bodywork is done :)
now, on to stuff, you rally these cars?? do you have any hints/tips for getting power out of the standard 4 cylinder, and whats the best way to get them to handle well?
mine have all been fairly standard, biggest mods being extractors and a 1.4L in a couple.

Hi Rich and Welcome,
You could come along to our first event of the year and come out to play with the Rotary's at Japfest.

G'day Rota_Motor,
I'm actualy running the D5 1490cc motor with the following mods
Rebored using +60 thou pistons - now 1598cc
Lightened and balanced crank, con rods and flywheel
Block decked
20 thou skimmed from the head
Polished and matched ports
Cam reground with 285 degrees of duration
32/32 DGAV Webber and high flow filter
Stock manifold and system
Aftermarket electronic ignition
This happily revs to 8000 all day and produces 82 BHP at the wheels @6500, though it then tails off to 76 with 73lbf of torque.
I have a pair of Webber 40 DCNF's for it which I'll be fitting in about May time when the competition season allows.
I know you to be a regular on Ausrotary so keep an eye on Geoff (sv_i) posts as, although his is a standard D5 motor, he is about to fit injection or a turbo. It'll probably be on the STB and FA3 Register thread under User Guide LInes.
If you need any more info then please ask.
Clive: thanks very much for the invite, and as long as my money making scheme (work!) allows, I'll be there.
Adios,
Rich

thanks, sv_i and myself have talked a little via PM etc. about 1300's ;)
and I am thinking going turbo or injection, and nothing really like anyone else does.
just one thing, I have heard that UK guys run sidedraft webers on these motors? is that using a fabricated manifold or what?

G'day mate,
I havnt seen anyone running sidedraughts (is there enough room?), although I have seen this motor run on twin 40 DCNF downdraughts, as shown below.
http://hometown.aol.co.uk/jmazdaman/images/img_0010.jpg
I was lucky enough to get hold of two complete set ups, and will be fitting one to the D5 in a few months time, although I have used them on a TC motor before.
I also moded a standard manifold to run twin inch and a half SU's.
These gave fantastic throttle/engine response (almost motorbike like!) but not much torque tho.

Any more questions feel free to ask ;)
Have a nice day,
Rich

Richard,
you said to ask anymore questions ;)
well I was just told they were raced as part of a one model series?? and they used webers, assumed to be sidedraft :)
a couple questions about both setups :)
the weber manifold, is that a custom casting, or were they mass produced, how common are they, and how much do they go for, with or without carbs? and I notice the water? pipes out of the manifold below both carbs, were these hooked up to a common water pipe for manifold heating, as per factory?
now for the SU's, how well did they work? and are those braass fittings along the top just to equalise manifold vacuum? and finally are the manifold water galleries retained as per factory?
I am interested in these for my daily driven 1300, so throttle response is probably nmore important than outright power, and I want to keep my heater etc. all working like factory too :)
was thinking of building a turbo motor up, but if I can get decent inlets for a decent price, I may go N/A instead, I have never seen an aftermarket/modded inlet for TC/UC/D5 motors, except for maybe an adapter plate ansd a 32/36 weber from a 2 litre escort.
thanks for all the help, I guess the old 1400 in the shede will be getting a wakeup call and bolted to the engine stand for teardown and rebuild :)

Hi,
The one make series was for the 323 when it was first introduced over here in ’77. Anyone interested bought a kit of bits from Mazda UK which included the manifold and carbs, a cam, leci fuel pump, roll cage, sump and fuel tank guards, and a front engine bay strut brace.
There were a limited number of kits produced, I don’t know how many, but would guess no more than 50. There are very few 323’s on the road now, let alone anyone competing in one, so I’ve never seen any more of these set-ups, although I do own two myself. :D To be honest I wouldn’t know where to start looking for one now.
Yes your right, the two bottom pipes did hook up to a specially made pipe that was part of the kit to allow manifold heating. The other (orange) pipe is for manifold vacuum to the brake booster, as fitted to the 323.
As for the SU’s, I wouldn’t recommend them – as I said they’re all about engine response but not much torque which doesn’t make it very enjoyable to drive. The other problem is that, unless your dyno shop has a large choice of needles, you’ll find them difficult to tune. I know we did.
The mounting blocks I welded on actually blocked off the original water galleries, so I just made up a straight piece of pipe to join the heater hose to the smaller thermostat pipe – didn’t cause any problems tho.
Right again – the brass fittings were to equalise pressure, although I never found out if it improved the overall set up since I went back to the 32/32 Webber.
I’ve spent a load of time and money on different carby set ups and can honestly say that going any bigger than a 32/36 is a waste of time, unless of course you go twin 40’s;)
Hope this helps
Rich

thanks heaps rich,
pity the SU setup doesnt work so good :( as thats probably the easiest way out for me, without access to any special manifolds.
wonder if you could do similar mods, but to suit a single sidedraft weber, I dont like the chances of clearance though :(
so it looks like the induction is still the main issue for me, cam can be reground, and I already have extractors, just getting some decent carburetion seems like it will be a problem, I dont know why, dont really like the idea of a 32/36 or similar on an adapter plate strapped to the top, wouldnt look as good as a pair of SU's hanging off the side ;)

rain or not, it was great to see the 2 old-skool-ers side by side. having a run in rich's was a bit of an inspiration - can't wait to improve my running gear/ grunt now. great fun little cars.
