Hello all,
I've got a very sorry state 1974 Mazda 929 that I'm trying to
fix up as a bit of a 'rod ..It's a UK car and is identical to the RX4
coupe except it has a 1.8 4-cylinder gutless engine, 4-speed
box and tops out at about 85mph (on a private road officer ..
honest). At 70+ it's revving it's conkers off, and returns about
20 mpg ..ouch ..
So, engine transplant and 5-speed box are on the cards, and
I'm a bit concerned about the rear axle coping with an increase
in horses ... Can anyone tell me if the axle in the 929 (what the
car was badged as in the UK in 1974) is any use ? Is it the same
as the RX4 Rotary (which had twice the power of the 1.8 4-cyl
at it's pathetic peak of 68 bhp) or do I need to find an alternative
live axle ?

Thanks for reading ..

not too sure about UK spec cars, but australian delivered 1.8L 929s and 12A powered RX-4s use the same size dif assemblies in them.

the later 13B powered RX-4s have a slightly heavier duty centre and thicker axles, but with anything up to a mild 13B, the rear axle should cope with it, if you dont drive it too hard. (burnouts etc.)
