On the way to rs4 my auto box 'lets go'. I have no first, reverse or final drive. Do I?

a) Replace with 2nd hand box
b) Look for an FD with a blown engine
c) Transplant to my E2200 Van

Suggestions please...

Thanks

Sorry to hear that mate,

I do have the name and a tel no of the guy in kent that rebuilt/modified sicknote's auto gearbox on his FD. Let me know if you woulfd like it.

I also might know where you could get a second hand one off a cosmo (I dont know if the fd and cosmo boxes are exactly the same).

Jon

Thanks Jon,

Have sent Carl at Hayward Rotary an email to see if he has something suitable.

I will ring rxmotors as well as they have a fair few cosmo parts in stock usually.

PS thanks for the cd

Is it very practical to do a manual conversion?

pintglass
12th August 2007, 09:58 AM
Hmmm,

I have seen a number of cosmo's with manual conversions done. Sounds appealing but I dont think it would suit the character of the car. Another consideration is that I'm due to move to Scotland very shortly so cant have the car in bits for too long while I source everything required.

Thanks anyway

I have heard from Oddball, he has an FD auto box, but will it fit?

Anyone have a clue on this?

Thanks

Get john to send some photos, as I believe if you have a 13b comso it should be ok but the 20b was slightly different, I think it was the starter mounts differently. Or wait for one of our resident Gurus to tell

Try Hardy Engineering in Leatherhead - they will rebuild just about any box from 1920's to present.

the fd box is different in many ways including mountings and wiring. i was looking to take this route when ours packed up but found it wasn't going to be possible. we forunately found a good secondhand box, but the place where we got the box from don't have another i'm afraid. you're going to need to find a good second hand one or get yours rebuilt. annoyingly, 20b ones aren't difficult to source as people get those hust for the engines. good luck, sorry to be the voice of doom!

btw, the box you need is model no. BM500 :)

Thanks Ultraman,

Have been to super 7 today, he had a BF500 model that looked good, brought it home, its 2.5 inches longer than the original box. Took the original along for comparison but only checked obvious things such as wiring looms, splines, etc. Dad took one look and said 'too long', the chassis has alternate mounting holes but the prop shaft would then be too long...

My fault entirely, will know next time. Have rung Jason as Super 7, he has called all his contacts in the country, no boxes anywhere.

Anyone fancy a tidy 13b Cosmo without a gearbox? good compression (high 7's)...

Try contacting DHM on here, is in NZ or OZ I believe and has more parts and knowledge than most on Cosmos.
Send him a PM

Ricky

Drop Dave Morris aka DMRH an email (may take him a while to get back to you) also try www.teameunos.com/forums (they're a nice bunch and may be able to help you find the right number for the box). I believe the 20b Jatco box was also used in the nissan patrol and some skylines so the 13b jatco box may have been used elsewhere, either way Dave will probably know.

Thanks for all the advice. I have taken the controversial route of attempting to place the BF500 box in place of the BM500. The only issue at the moment is the propshaft length which will need approx 2 inches cut out. I have the number of a company that can sort me out on this front quite inexpensively. As we speak the box is in the car and mounted on the engine, the prop shaft is all thats left to do...

Im thinking that if is in fact a 20b box the internals will be stronger to cope with the increased torque and the ratios might be slightly longer which may lead to a higher top speed??? This being the case, perhaps I should downsize my current 16's to regain acceleration???

Good to see you might have a solution

Ratios in 1st and 2nd are different but final gear is the same, so your final speed is theoretically the same (unless you change your diff to the 20b one which would give you more)?

On the bright side the extra strength would go well with a nice big single and a higher stall converter!

Keep updated

Would a 20B propshaft fit and solve the length issue?

pintglass
17th August 2007, 06:57 PM
Would a 20b prop shaft fit? Well, Jason at Super 7 swears that the box i have is def a 13b box. However it is wider, longer and a different shape to the original. Having said this there are mounting points in the chassis for it (???) so we can only asssume (probably rightly) that the 20b and 13b body shells are the same.

To cut a long story short, when I spoke to Jason I also asked if he had any 20b prop shafts, which he doesnt. Great minds think alike Brett.

He does have a 3 rotor cosmo there that will become a donor for an FD. Another cosmo goes to the car park in the sky...

Apologise for jumping into this one late.

The JC13B box is the same as many R32 Skyline's, The HD + HE 929, The FD RX-7. Mounting points (piston) bellhousings & extension housings vary from car to car but the internals are all very much alike.

The JC20B box has only the Nissan Patrol 4.2lt as its friend & again the bellhousing, extension housing & mounting points are unique to the car.

Last time I checked, the 20B box was a few CM longer than the 13B version & your BF500 / BM500 code sounds correct too (memory fading) as the best way to tell the 13B & 20B apart from each other.

The wiring loom & plugs should be the same with the exception of a single wire. (for the water temp sensor you wont have being a 13B car)

Am curious now. Your 13B TRANS ECU may have the higher RPM change points in it meaning it should feel the same as your previous box.

If you still get the same change points, then let us know as I am interested in swapping the 20B TRANS ECU over to a 13B one myself.

Hi Dave,

Sorry the reply has taken so long, have had to move to Scotland for work.

Now I am settled and am missing the car on these great roads. However:-

The gearbox installation was completed just before I moved up, I had a chance to drive it but it was DEFINATELTY not right.

In answer to your question Dave the change points are different so wouldn't recommend the trans ecu swap, change ups are a bit later.

So, I am now stuck with a 13b cosmo with another duff box and a shorter prop shaft...

My initial thoughts are to convert to manual does anyone have any experience of this conversion and a knowledge of the parts required?

Thanks for any input

Go manual you'll not regret it anyone fairly competent with a spanner and welder can do the mod as its awkward rather than hard. A few things will no doubt be different between the conversion on a 13b as opposed a 20b but nothing major.

Used the fd box in mine but still pretty straight forward. Locating the pedal under the dash was probably the worst bit as there's bugger all room there.

Not much happening at the moment, its getting near christmas and I'm already skint! We're trying to sort out the fueling, ignition and WI at the moment. It will go for a remap in Jan where I hope to see what she'll really do. I will post an update and pics in the members section early next year.
