dreaded rust!!!

My 1990 TII is mostly fine! The ABS has died (not a major issue) and more serious is rust at the top of the windscreen which has now compromised the seal and caused the car to suffer a dampness problem. Has anyone tried taking the screen out, treating the rust and replacing said screen (I expect I'll need a bigger seal), if so how easy or not is this procedure?? Might make a good Sunday afternoon project :cool

I would highly recommend getting a profesional to remove the windscreen and then refit it (if it is possible ... if its a bonded screen I don't think they come out in one piece :eek: )

Sounds like more than an afternoons work to me ;)

Just to let you know, getting the screen out is a total b*stard! When I was ripping my old egi apart for spares I had a go at the screen, even with the right kit you wont get it off in one peice (bonded) and you have to be really careful not to scratch the paint too!
My advice, get a pro in, the £250 will be well worth it, plus if they screw it up u can make them pay to fix any damage!

am thinking about taking out the sunroof too (excess weight and beginning to show signs of rust bubbles) may replace with fibregalss panel or even a fixed perspex sheet any thoughts?:bandit

I'm not sure, looks like the rust goes under the windscreen seal. Any suggestions on that would be much appreciated.:)

Sorry to drag this 6 year old thread up:Laugh but im interested as to what happend! Is it not possible to just remove the windscreen trim to get to the rust?

It didnt think it looked to bad only surface rust were the paints flaked off, It looked like the seal will pull out around the screen and give enough room to work.

So i helped it up a bit and made it look worse :2Mad

Another pic of the seal which needs replacing anyway but i dont want to pull it out till i know i can get another one!
