Ok this is where you`ll find your plugs, right under the black intercooler pipe that is bolted to the throttle body and plenum(bit shiney metal thingy)

First off its easyer to remove the strut bar with is just bolted on by 4 12mm nuts, i just undid 1 side and lifted it up lol.. all about safty :D

Next theres 4 10mm bolts holding the intercooler pipe on, undo the top 2 and theres 2 below, you`ll struggle to see these so just feel for them.

Next undo the hose thats holding the pipe to the intercooler, mines a hks one but the standards just the same..

You`ll be left with something list this, Just remember where leads go, best to do 1 at a time, better safe than sorry :yes
They can be a bit fiddly to get out, 1 and 2 in the pic are a doddle, just use the racket with the swivel bit and socket

Plugs 3 and 4 are a bit harder to get at because theres cables n poo in the way, use the swivel, socket and extension bar for these ones..

Belows the before and after pics of my plugs, pretty naff, could really do with replacing but im waiting on a order coming :)
Just do the oposit for refitting.
Plugs in this condiction gave me lumpy starts and a bad shake in the :censored::censored::censored::censored:pit so worth checking yours if you have similar condictions :D

Any who hope this helps some of you out :Santa

Also you can get to the plugs from underneath, just jack the car up n have a fiddle, i found this easyer and cleaner lol..

Cheers
Craig :driving

what did you use to clean your plugs mate?

interloper393
16th March 2007, 10:46 AM
Wire brush and carb cleaners done a few times should get them gleaming bud, or wet and dry sandpaper...:)

i usually just wire brush each one, just keep turning the plugs to get at it from every angle :)

In the diagram picture above, labelled 1-4... which ones are leading plugs and which ones trailing?

Also... NGK BUR9EQP and NGK BUR7EQP... I have two of each. Which are meant for leading and which for trailing?

Also have a set of Magnecor leads to fit also. Are these easy to do as well?

Thanks for the guide. Great help so far!

Is it wise to copper grease the new plugs too when putting them in?

interloper393
24th March 2007, 11:05 AM
1 and 3 are the leading plugs bud, you`ll know when you see them as they have 2 blue bands on the white part of the plugs.
To fit the leads you need to remove the oil filler neck, a few 10mm bolts i think from memory :S

Hope this helps :)

Not sure on the copper grease tho lol

I'm guessing that NGK BUR9EQP are the leading type?
And NGK BUR7EQP is the trailing type?

I'll have a go at doing the plugs and leads tomorrow.
Can anyone point out the AST on a picture? As have a Pettit Racing one to fit.

Yeah I always copper grease plugs slightly when putting them in to stop them seizing. Well I always have done on piston type engines. Wondered if it was the same with Rotary.

cant see it doing any hard man, just a very light smear maybe?

The yellow cap to the right is the ast bud.

Tiger_kpt
24th March 2007, 12:54 PM
Sweet. I'll get that fitted tomorrow too then. Do you know if the AST hold water when the engine is cold? As in... when I remove it to fit the new one... will it **** everywhere? lol.

Want to try to do this stuff myself so that I can save a bit of bread when it comes to going to WGT's it a week or so for a load of work.

I've always found NGK plugs to be a bit poor. I know most use them on here with no probs but they made my scoob run sick as a parrot.

I used HKS Iridium plugs in my Type RS and they were superb. Also in the STI.

7s are leading. Colder plugs generally for trailing, but 9s all round are a cheaper alternative that most use on here (mild tune).

The ast will have water in it, so just bung up the hoses or be quick and plug them onto the new ast as soon as you remove from the old.

I changed the spark plugs on my FD and did all 4 of them from underneath the car, took 10 minutes and did not need to disconnect anything. Just jacked up the passenger side, axle stand underneath and there job done. Tools used was the plug socket and a 2" extension bar.

I ordered them from Pettit Racing in the USA. Ordered quite alot of parts from them, Cracking service and good price.

This time next week i'll have the REX back with a load of different goodies fitted. Canny wait!

And BUR9EQP are trailing?

get a flex head 3/8 stubby ratchet and you can do them from top without removing anything

HKS plugs are made by NGK

But my HKS plugs looked different to the NGKs i took out!! But i know HKS do get stuff made elsewhere. Plus they were cheaper

NGK and Denso make plugs for multiple companys, all different specs.

From memory the HKS plugs have had issues with the tip falling off.

Actually I thought that 2 and 4 were the leading plugs and where the 7's would go.
Therefore the 9's would go into the top ones ie 1 and 3 on your picture.
Is this correct?

Nice write up, but i heard that your not supposed to clean plugs with a wire brush as this scratches the surface of the electrode and causes a weaker spark??

Very Good write up, flooded the car for the first time, used your method to remove plugs, works very well got the car going in an hour. Would not have attempted this without you help many thanks.
