Another message from the mothership:

Mr. Hayward of Newbury Berkshire, has asked me to put up a post about one of his projects, as he is busy in the garage…

Anyone remember the Black 1st gen Carl ran as RS3? Peripheral Port…Well, after Carl took the engine out had a bit of a play, then refitted it, unfortunately he wasn’t concentrating during the re-build and accidentally added a third rotor!!

I got there one day for a cuppa, said ‘What the hell is that?’.. he said ‘Yeah..Well it’s a 3-rotor isn’t it’

So anyway, the engine is mounted on a custom cross member/mount and after some fettling and grinding was joined on to an RX8 six speed box.

The prop shaft is from some mazda of the past?? ( at one point there was 6 different shafts on the floor by the ramp) with a modified flange at the rear to mount correctly with the diff.

Again the engine is a Peripheral Ported lump, it runs a custom racing beat Dizzy, (which is made of Perspex!!).

The carb thing was a bit of a challenge as well, after many many many hours of searching on the net trying to locate a 3 barrel carb, Carl decided to use one whole Webber IDA, and modify another, to make the 3 chokes required.

Cant wait to hear it fire!! Should be blinkin awsone..

Message End!!

(ive prob got something wrong but am sure Mr. Hayward wil correct later on)

Love the painted engine look and perpex dizzy. That would look crazy in the dark :)
Can some one explain the difference between a short and long block.:xconfused Never understood this.

next time you see a 20B look at the centre plate ... it's larger than the others. That is because it houses an extra bearing (a centre bearing ... somthing 2 rotors don't have as stadard) and two secondary (large) ports.

if you look at a short block 3 rotor it uses a standard width 2 rotor centre housing ... problem is you end up with one rotor that has two small ports instead of one small and one large ... it don't matter with peripheral port though :D

As far as I can tell the centre plates in a short block are the same size, in the 20b the second centre plate is about twice the size (and weight) on the normal 13b centre plate.

I'm sure I'll get :flamed if that is wrong

Have to see if i can get one of each together to spot the difference easily :D
Thanks anyway guys :Thumbs-up

notice they have them in the wrong order .. otherwise the rear rotor has two large ports and the centre one two small ones :)

The 2 side housings in the middle in your pic need swapping - the fat 20B intermediate plate with the additional bearing/gear carrier goes behind the front rotor housing. You can see the difference in size of the primary and secondary intake ports - each rotor housings needs a small one and a large one where as in their current arrangement the rear rotor housing has to secondary ports and the middle rotor housing has 2 primary ports :)

First thing I want to do is get you to check out the tailpipe when we first start it up to make sure it is LOUD enough for you.
That way you won't have any problems from that point on with "Obtrusive" noise.

And how is having a stat gear fitted so cheap?

Hi Matt,
I think that Ian means the PP housings,if they are from Mazda then they are around $2000.00 USD a piece.
The PP housings in this engine are modded stock Mazda ones, they are RX4 rotor housings.
The mod for the stationary gear to the center plate is quite involved too,so does cost to do.
