I have a 80 RHD rx-7. I installed a rear end from a 85 gsl 6 months ago. I just got a 85 gsl-se parts car and want to swap front and rear on my 80 for the nice lug pattern. Can i just pull the axles and use them in my gsl axle? Also I was thinking of swaping the whole front suspension including sway bars etc. What does everyone think and any tips? front suspension is still a 1980 style

Thanks, Gonzz

From the "mazda RX-7 performance handbook" by mike ancas:

"A cheap solution for 1G drivers is to do a rear axle swap with a 1984-1985 GSL-SE. If you cant find a GSL version, the 1984-5 SE also came with a limited slip differential. But if you are going to swap out the rear axle, you may as well get the vented rear discs that came on the GSL -SE.

The problem with a rear axle swap between the 1984 plus cars and 1979-82 chassis was that in 1983, the drive shaft flange changed to a slightly larger unit. This can be matched, but it presents an additional challenge. All swaps between other 1983-85 cars and the GSL-SE axle are a straightforward procedure"

There, I type it up, but I dont really understand it! I also dont know if this helps you or not, hope it does :-)

I think what it means is - swap the whole thing, not just the shafts, or some machining will be needed. ????

Just finished the suspension swap. Was real easy to do. Now time to get some 17" wheels..

ok, can you help me understand my own post? !!!

Did you swap the whole thing, or just the shafts?

I ended up swaping the whole rear end. I love it and will go shopping for some 17" wheels next weekend.
