View Full Version : Totally stripping a shell

Hi all,
Been a while since I've posted my own thread on here, I'm not currently an RX owner so I have been a bit quiet on the scene recently.

Anyway, next time I get a rotary, i'm either going to stick a 13b in another car (possibly an s13 200sx) or just build a REALLY nice street FD, either way, i'm only going to do it when I have a budget of about £20,000 to make sure it's done right.

If I choose the second route (the FD) I want to do it no-expense spared style, but still do as much work myself as possible. So I will port and build the engine, and prep the bodywork as much as I can, (i'm leaving the actual bodywork to experts!) try and do the interior myself etc etc.
So, if i'm going to do it properly, I should probably start from brass tacks and get a bare metal re-spray, what I want to know is what is the best way to go about stripping to the bare shell?

I have stripped a car before, but only removed the major items, and left anything of little or no value on the shell, and I didn't have to put it back together as it was a crash damaged one being stripped for parts.
What is the best way to do it to ensure you can get everything back on in the right place, right order and so on, without ending up with a bag of bolts and a few bits of important looking metal at the finish?

I'm thinking lots of photo's, lots of notes, lots of small labels and baggies?
Anybody got any idiot-proof procedures?

oh, and for a bit of daydream fuel, i'm thinking street port, t70, v-mount, 400rwhp, tein suspension, Work Termist SC1 18's, full burnout kit, run racing headlights (if i can EVER find a set) High level carbon fibre spoiler (the only bit i already have!), TVR style stitched leather interior including stripped out rear space in dark red, small ice install, minimal rollcage, finished in solid jade green (like MR J.T's blue, but a green version). mmmmm :)

Take lots of photos and keep screws, nuts, rubber caps etc in bags and either write the photos name/number on them or a description.

That's what i did with my rebuild: worked really well. Knew which bag the bits were in straight away.

By the way: Tim has a brand spanking new FD shell in his treasure trove. Just thought you might want to know.... ;)

Mke sure you have plenty off room to keep all the stuff that comes out! You'd be surprised how much room is taken up with the clutter.

Be ever so careful removing the trim panels. All the plastic is old and hence brittle. The clips need to be gently prised off, rather than just grabbing a panel and waiting for the 'pop' as the clips come loose. Some panels have a mixture of clips and screw fixings, make sure you undo all of the screws before trying to prise a panel off!

Make a plan and stick to it! Plan jobs in the right order (might sound daft), but you wouldn't want to paint the shell and then weld a cage in, ruining your paint work.

You're more than welcome to pop over my place to see how my shell is coming along, might give you a few ideas?

Cheers peeps,
I did make a lot of little labelled bags when I removed my last engine, and wrote a very basic list of what order I removed things in, I guess I just need to do the same only in a bit more detail then. Time to get the coloured felt tip pens out I reckon!

Nikp, i've seen that shell and I can't even imagine how much that must be worth! plus I would need a donor car or two for all the bits to put on it, would save me some work though...

Max, i'm free tonight? 07779599604. Would be cool to see what you are up to.
