I've been looking at buying an RX7 for months now (and I probably will be in months to come) and I want to know what they are really like to drive. I've read hundreds of reviews listing the amount of G's it can produce in corners, accerleration figures, braking times, and lap times but nothing about day to day driving. I know that it was made to be a pure sports cars (more so than all it's rivals) so it isn't normally considered. I drive a 1991 Eunos Roadster and I've read before that the RX7 exhibits similar handling characteristics to it's baby bro. Has anybody had the pleasure :o) of driving an MX5 and what did you think. Also how are they to drive in normal conditions i.e traffic. I've recently read motoring journalists reviewing the RX8 comments on the 'light switch first turbo'. At 2,500 rpm it seems to be right around 'cruising' revs. This must be terrible in wet weather conditions...

Ive had mine a couple of months, and havnt driven it much so here my impression.
Traffic - No problems. Its one of the easiest cars Ive ever just sat in and been able to drive.
Handling. My other car is a Pulsar GTiR 300BHP, 4wd. You can do anything in it. It just goes. Slight understeer on hard entry but thats it. Boot it again and go.
I got the RX7 and the first time I drove it it went sideways. Found out a low rear tyre didnt help as it was much better after being pumped up, but it still goes sideways rather easily.
Having said this, one of the reason why I bought it was when chasing an RX7 through some twisties in the Pulsar I almost spun the thing. Could not match the cornering. After getting from the RX into the Pulsar it feels soft and wallowy. The suspension on the RX isnt standard, but its certainly not over hard or anything and feels really nice.
When it does go sideways its so far been easy enough to control so I just need to get used to it.
Never had another RWD car, and no idea what its like to an MX5 however.
Cheers

Celica GT-four, chipped GTi-R then RX7, how much do you spend on insurance. My 5 costs me a grand second driver! Is the RX7 a 92 and is it uk spec or import? How much was it? How many miles?

Yes, the rx7 is a 1992 import.
45,000 miles.
Would rather not say what I paid for it really, but im happy enough with the price :)
Dont have the GT-4 anymore, sold to a friend. Still got the Pulsar though. Part of me wants to keep that but part of me says itll pay for a big single

I use to have my RX-7 serviced at T.W. Whites - and occasionally I had to use an MX-5 for the day whilst it was being serviced.
All I can say is chalk and cheese, the RX-7 really is 10 times better and more exciting to drive than an MX-5.
Better acceleration, better handling, better braking.
I remember getting into the service managers MX-5 one time, he was telling me how good the car was etc. and after driving it for around 10 mins. I was really dissapointed. When I took it back, I had asked him if he had driven an RX-7 and he said yes - it is a little too much for me! :)
