Mate thats a decent time from the bug! Is the gearbox stock? hat rpm were you taking off from that line at? oh yeah, and what mile per hour?
top result. Hope you will bring it to rotorstock.
cheers, michael.

thats a superb time for a bug, stock fds get that sort of time.

what engine set are you running?

dubber91
1st May 2006, 07:33 PM
stock as a rock! wheelspan through 1st 2nd and into 3rd! best top speed was 93mph. I feel with a few more revs (i.e. fiting the carb and a nice exhaust) i'll be able to get better top speed as i change into fourth just before the line.... weird thing was, first run (15 secs) i got the same top speed as my best run (14.3)

I hope i can make it to rotorstock! Gotta get her running spot on for that! then you in the moggy and me in the bug yeah????

Then i can get era to put together a bridgeport motor for me........ unless your up for it!

on launch.....i reckon with some weight saving around the front and some traction she'll wheelie!

and proof as she crossed the line.....beating the preacher!

Interesting comparison...I would say the time is similar to a stock FD but would expect the FD to be around 100mph going across the line..So seems like the Bug gets going quicker but the FD comes good a bit further up the strip...What does the bug weigh and what gearing are you running? Suppose aerodynamics must play a part too......

dubber91
2nd May 2006, 08:50 AM
well aero will play a part, but its a squared relationship and only has major effect above 70mph

Aero drag = roe x v(squared) x Coef (drag) x Area

the bug is full weight, i'd guess at around 1000kg. theres a weigh bridge up the road though so may give em a fiver to see what it weighs
gearing wise its a stock box.
1:4.37 Final drive, 3.78 1st, 2.06 2nd, 1.26 third, 0.89 4th. with 165/80 tyres!!!!

it certainly is interesting. the reduced weight leads to quicker acceleration (what you want) but it looses its legs up top due to gearing. I reckon with a decent gearbox i'd be in the 13s, theres a crap rev drop first to second....

Congrats on the time - how was Big Bang?

Once you start getting a big faster with the big wheels it'll be the ring and pinion that goes, esp the 4.37

dubber91

yeah i reckon a built box is next on the list!

ah a man after my own heart...

Although I'm keeping the rotary in the FD and the flat 4 in the bug ;)

hehe :)

You can't beat a nice 2276 on 48 IDA's - or a blown methanol autocraft engine :)

Hey Flat4Matt - I assume the yellow bug is an old VWDRC car from when they used to have the super street class :) Those were the days... Cold Sweat, JMR's race car, Moody... ah the list goes on....

FLAT4MATT
3rd June 2006, 10:48 PM
Yeah mate the yellow car was a regular in the 90's best time of 11.09 at 139mph running a 2276 on DRLAs with a squirt of the old laughing gas all fully street legal etc...

I bought it about 18 months ago with a view to rebuilding it and racing it myself but I STILL aint done anything with it so it looks like i'll be selling it on some time in te near future to fund the blue one.

just an update for some of you.....although some of this project is top secret......;)

Basically some parts collection. Ive found a built gearbox:

http://file022.bebo.com/12/large/2006/11/05/19/5750708a2468312467b577224629l.jpg

mmmmmmmmm greasy!

needs a clean! Heres the spec

1st - 3.80
2nd - 2.06
3rd - 1.48
4th - 1.04
Diff - 4.125

Cheap mans uprated diff (heavy shimming sideplates etc etc) steel shift forks....early case.

Let me know what ya reckon to those ratios....

then i splashed out on some nice seats :Talking1

http://file025.bebo.com/4/large/2006/11/05/20/5750708a2468614528b200026802l.jpg

bloody uncomfortable but they should save me about 15kg!

then its a **** load more work for me (and some others ;)) over the winter to get her ready for spring and the dragstrip..... Hoping for 12s!

Cool seats steve! not too comfy for long jouneys but for around 12seconds at a time they should be spot on!!! :)

dubber91
8th November 2006, 11:07 PM
yeah! theyre tig welded aluminium...just wish i could afford the intermediate oval seats rather than the economies.......im sure im going to get piles on long journeys!

Nice very nice :)

right well it seems i have inadvertently bitten off more than i expected.....im sure i can still chew down on it but its a right mouthfull!

Seems whilst im there were talking about a short axle conversion (using shorter driveshafts which are somehow stronger than longer axles) which also means more clearance for wider tyres at the back.

ontop of that ive started making up my own rear disc brake conversion. Im using some rover Vittesse calipers coupled with a home made caliper mount.

Ive then got to figure out how to make up some 'hubs' upon which to mount some rotors (discs without centres). Thaughts at the moment are based around stock beetle rear drums turned down to remove all of the braking area. They then will need further turbing to fit inside some porsche 914 (same stud pattern) disc rotors.

Just ideas at the moment but we'll see how it goes!
