Very cheap way to do it would if everyone downloaded Yahoo messenger then you can have a friends list (MRC list) an see who is online and chat to them when u want.

Well we could just start an MSN thread for peoples address but its not the same. A dedicated chat room has a better feel to it imho.

It would be easy to set something up in IRC, but you would probably only get the geeks in there. Needs to be something simple like just clicking a button on a page and off you go to the chat room. I have seen other V-Bulletin boards that do this.
