Fired my FD up tonight and let her idle for a while, came up to temp, fans kicked in, couldn't find the keys for the car that was parking me in so knoked her off & poped the bonnet to let her cool. Then I noticed a funny amber glow comeing from the turbos (thought it was fire at first  !!!)
Does this sound normal? should they get that hot just idleing or have I got turbo issues???
boost does seem to be OK, but a little down ( 0.7-0.8 bar)from what it used to push when I first bought it (0.9 - 1bar!!)
Cheers guys,
Jono

Turbo should not be glowing, youve not even had them on boost if just ticking over

Maybe theyre being starved of oil and not keeping cool... Id be concerned as they should only glow really after a hard session of boosting IMO.

Is it running rich at idle?
Blocked Cat could cause it, if you have one

i dont know much about rotarys or cats, but i DO know that turbos shouldnt glow on idle! wouldnt even hav thought theyd glow if having no oil on idle the turbos dont even spin on idle usually maybe a tiny bit but not fast enough to cause that much heat. check for blocked exhaust tho mate. id give turbo technics a ring if i were u.
on all the turbo's ive had theyve only glowed after a considerable bashing :flamed , funniest was on my last car which i had relocated the turbo nearer cold air to keep it cooler, it fried the paint on my bonnet.....

Hi Jono,
I wouldn't worry Mr , I beleive that where the engine would have been reving through it's cold start sequence it would have created just enough heat in the dark to let you see some colour.
When you are driving your car under load the Turbo's at times will be glowing bright bright red if not white hot.
Have a look at these shots of Turbo's and you will get an idea of just how hot Turbo's get at times.
These pictures show why you should let your car tick over for a few minutes after driving to let the Turbos cool so the oil does not fry inside.
I have even had non-Turbo cars that I have reved in the pits to get them warm before racing with the bonnet off have the tube manifolds glowing !

That's what I wanted to hear Clive!!!
The colour of the turbo was about thew same as the exhaust pipe leaving the turbo on the secon pic you posted!!! Not too hot????
Also the whole exhaust is red hot, even the tail pipe will boil water if it's driped on to?? and the gasses coming out are too hot to hold your hand in for any longer than 6 seconds ( about 4 inches from tail pipe!!)
Cheers fellas,

what's it idling at, rpm wise?, if it is too high then the auto idle control circuit could be kicking in and changing timing making it run really hot to try and adjust the idle speed. I've seen this happen before, is your idle screw and cable etc set up correctly to idle at around 800rpm>?

Not sure if it's any help but my mates EGT guage shows 400 degrees on idle in his MR2 - give it a bit of throttle and it almost instantly goes up to 600+ :evillaugh

I love the glow of a turbo after a good run! Although the paint on the inside of my bonnet didn't lol!!
