there are quite a few japanese bathurst models. the 1st was the 1994 R2 bathurst. it was actually a cut price model limited to 500 cars. 2 seats, no spoilers, no rear wiper, no strut bar, no fog lights and blue tint glass instead of grey tint. this allowed mazda to sell it just under 3million yen. or 25% cheaper than the RZ. most buyers immediately put the money saved back into the car and bought at least the rear spoiler. at the time mazda said it was optimised for city life. later in the version 3 series, 1995? mazda released the bathurst x, this was had all the usual options plus red leather seats. i've scanned some of the front pages from japanese FD parts books and they list all the specs for each model, but in japanese of course. i've posted them here

from 1996 other bathurst models also appeared and there is some confusion with the RB models, some say it means R bathurst...eric e r2 bathurst owner

Pretty much confirms my car is one of the 500.

It is all black, carbon fibre effect seats (2), black instrument bezels, no splitter and a custom rear spoiler. Also came with front and rear strut bars which I suspect the Japanese owner had fitted. Does yours have twin oil coolers?

Cheers,

Richard

I had the VIN number checked against a stolen register years back, and it came back described as a Bathurst edition. It's a 1994 car, no cat needed !!!, and I always wondered if it was one of the 500.

Twin oil coolers surprise me for an economy model, it seems more like a lightweight version for performance?

...and it has the hardest Bilstein shock absorbers, they shake your fillings out on our bumpy roads !

Cheers,

Richard

tell me your vin number and i will tell you more. the R2 bathurst started production from FD3S-300211. my car is FD3S-300253. all japanese FD's came with 2 oil coolers except the auto models that had 1 oil cooler and 1 auto transmission cooler. don't know why some markets got only the 1 on such a hot running engine

Mine is FD3S-300237 which puts in right in the range for a Bathurst R2

Can you get any more info on the car?

Cheers,

Richard

if you save to disc and print out this page, and the page before it, you'll know as much as i do.

from the factory an R2 bathurst would have had this decal as well

http://groups.msn.com/2wheelsgood/rx7.msnw?action=ShowPhoto&PhotoID=801

you don't mention it on yours, any sign of a repaint?

also shocks would have been normal type from the factory, but many owners in japan fit adjustable height shocks to lower their 7's. then they sell their oem shocks on auctions and they end up on different models than the factory fitted them too.

from 1 of the earlier pages above, the 777 red leather seated bathurst x models of 1995 started at FD3S-304954
