Hi guys,

I actually registered for a friend who has a RX7 I have a GT4.

What happened was he was driving when the car basically sputtered and died. He could get it rolling started but the engine was lifeless and wouldn't rev freely if he put the foot down in second. So the car would get to 20mph but no further.

Now it doesn't start at all. I know very little about these cars so any help would be appreciated. One other thing is when cranking it you can hear the exhaust with each revolution but doesn't fire. Battery is fine and it wouldn't start with a jump.

I'm thinking possibly blocked fuel filter, dead fuel pump or possibly flooding (having read it on here).

I had a quick look to see if I could check pressure at the rail, but erm, couldn't find the rail.

Any help greatly appreciated we are going to try and get it moving again later tonight.

Oh its a late 1992/early 1993 gen 3 (I think). Only modifications that I could see are HKS hardpipes, cat back exhaust.

mm it wont flood while driving.

But if you think its flooded, you could try holding the pedal flat while cranking, this stops the fuel pumping in.

Does sound like a fuel problem though. Is there fuel in the tank ?? :-)))

Hehe, yeah I asked that as my first question :). Would low fuel pressure cos them not to really go at all? Wondering if the pump is dying. Do RX7's have the same nasty Toyota device of switchable voltage to the fuel pump, low speed for normal then switched the fuel pump to high speed when the foots down?

What's the symptoms of knackered Apex seals and low compression?

Cheers for the help!

But if it stalled while it was still cold (For whatever reason) then next time you try and start it may flood. So, still could be flooded.

lewis, yes, there is a relay that switches pump between low speed and high speed.

Low compression symptoms are poor starting when hot. Knackered apex seal would be very rough running because it will only run on 4 out of 6 cumbustion "chambers".

I think it fuel.

Heres what I would do...

On the manifold on the right (drivers) side of the car, there is a litlle black plastic pipe. If the car has a boost gauge it will be connected here, if not its a blanking rubber.

Get a small syringe, fill it petrol, or petrol and a small amount of oil . Squirt it in there and try and start it.

If starts then dies, we know its a fuel problem.

I didn't have time to try it hopefully will soon. We tried to start it again and I noticied there is a really strong and potent smell of fuel coming from the engine. Seems to be coming from the right hand side (drivers) of the intake manifold?

Does that help? Will try the syringe method when I get a chance!

Sounds flooded to me! Are the spark plugs wet with fuel?
