View Full Version : Pace driver for motorways..

Road chiefs are recruiting "pace" drivers to make sure motorists stick to speed limits.

The trial scheme will see volunteers employed to keep a steady speed of 70mph or less in the third lane of the motorway.

More than 30 motorists have already applied to be Community Pace Drivers in Doncaster, Yorks.

The town's metropolitan borough council claims accidents which occur at lower speeds result in less severe injuries.

However it has come under fire from road safety gear suppliers Speedsafe, who have branded the scheme foolhardy and incompetent.

Speedsafe spokesman Paul Smith said: "Imagine the chaos caused by a pace car at 70mph in lane three of a motorway."

"This level of incompetence is breathtaking - safety depends on drivers adjusting speed to the environment."

What crap!!

They don't seem to understand the limits should be raised...and I do only mean by 10mph. I normally cruise 80ish now, used to be much faster.

To be honest it already shows what happens with the number of people that seem to think they belong in that lane. The highway code says use the left most empty lane? and the third lane is for overtaking only anyways. People will just undertake...I already do with middle-lane drivers when the slow lane is empty.

Pace drivers - probably all old farts or the god squad who think we should drive the toyota prius.

It'll just cause dangerous undertaking as said above.... and probably result in more accidents as the doddering old fool driving the "pace car" driver panics and crashes into the armco or the car undertaking it.

I say we all invest in MK2 golfs weld up some monster garage style cages / bull bars pop in a Big Block with a blower and ram them off the road :)

Just kiddin about the ramming off the road... but the idea does suck.

What gets me is the baffoons that think up this crazy sh*t. Why don't they just give in and actually sort out the motorways so that if its dry and clear you can choose the speed you go at. If the signs on the m42 carry on they could easily match what is done in Germany to give you warnings of oncomming problems quickly and safely.

Would be interesting to see how great the idea is when its pouring down with rain and 70mph is too fast.

All it will do is **** people off and cause accidents.

Sorry rant over (must do a track day soon :p)

Why don't they just have the cats eyes flash along at 70mph, that will help you concentrate more on your driveing (not). Sorry looking at trackday pages now :p

LOL. Thats along the lines of what I was thinking, the very same err, volunteers are probably likely to be the ignorant **se holes who sit in the middle lane, so I wouldn't even gamble on getting any where near 70mph.

Sorry, (no religious type casting intended) ahem, but if you have a fish thingy stuck on the boot of your Micra, then the cap is likely to fit so wear it  . Oddly enough, a lot of these folk do wear hats when driving. WTH is that all about? Leaking sun roof or extra protection from low flying wood pecker's...............

MAD IDEA and WASTE OF MONEY imo.

Just fit rev limiter's......................JOKE!

Rant over :D

Hmmm, tricky choice... (a) Undertake, cut them up and slam your brakes on (b) Undertake and push them into the armco (c) Undertake and spin them out (d) Ram them from behind.. or (e) Vote for a slightly less insane Government... or (f) all of the above.
And, no, im not joking... people will see red :reallymad :2Mad :Grrr

Makes me think, what'll these 'Pace' Drivers will be actually drive?
Unmarked cars or dayglo striped fake police things??
Will we able to indentify them as 'Pace prats'??
Will they be loaded up with with camera's etc etc,to catch the
under takers and road ragers they will create??
It'll cause more trouble than help.

What would be really nice is if Autotrader had actually researched the article before going to press with it!!!

The initiative by Doncaster council is for local roads only and no mention of 'blocking' or deliberately driving bleow the limit is made on their site.

Doesn't stop it from being a terrible and poorly thought through (i.e. not at all) idea.

At an indicated 30mph most cars are doing around 22-25mph as speedos under-read by design. Then you get someone doing an indicated 25 on their speedo and they're now travelling at an actual 18-20mph.

There will be accidents caused by unsafe overtaking as people become frustrated.

There will be more congestion, pollution and wasteage of fuel.

There will be road rage incidents.

The queues of traffic behind the rolling roadbolcks will begin to close up on each other and there will be many more rear end shunts as a result.

There busybody numpties will be so busy looking in their mirrors and dislocating shoulders trying to pat themselves on the back that they're likely to run the very people they're 'protecting' over.

Will they be fitted with calibrated speedos? I doubt it.
Will they be chosen for their driving acumen and high levels of training? I doubt this too.

Absolutely the worst people to carry out this role will be those attracted to do it.

Foolishness beyond belief.

Is Doncaster Labour controlled??
