OK, having not had any luck sourcing a custom made sub bix ive given into the idea that im going to have to build my own.

Can anyone give me some adice on the best size box, ideally for one 12" sub, but not essential. Not being an expert in stuff like this it will need to be MDF. I really want to keep my spare wheel as the car is so fecking low if I get a puncture I cant rely on the AA to get me home!

Thanks

It all depends on the spec sheet for the sub. The volume is usually around 1cuft for a 12in. Also make sure you buy a sealed sub, a sub designed for a ported box will need a much bigger box. It will be extremely difficult to build a sub box for a 12in sub. I've got a prototype box here that sits in the boot, but im looking at not using it, plus the sub has the coil mounted out of the box to try and get it flat enough for the shallow hieght of the boot.

I've got a 12" sub box i can measure if you can wait till tomorrow. It's carpetted so no idea how it's put together mind..

It's also for sale if you give up wanting to make one.

Have you got the sub yet or are you just initially thinking about it ? Just make sure you get a sealed sub with a max of 1 cuft box requirement and then all you have to do is build your box.

Whats the sec on the sub, peak power, RMS, make model etc. Get the wrong size/type box and it wont last long if you run it hard, to little or much reistance will damage/melt the coil.

if you search for a program called WIN ISD, you can enter the speakers thiele small parameters and then it will calculate the correct size box you will need and you can tune it to a specific ferquency it will also calculate your port sizes if your not after a sealed system. its a free program. give it a try.

yeh for a sealed box the general size is 1 cubic foot. ive made one for my fd but it all depends if you want to use the boot for anything else really. me and a mate made the one i have. sounds good. ive got a 12" kicker and it DOES kick, not bad for one sub. But im thinking of getting an InfinityPerfect 12. these subs are the shiznit for around 100notes! look up the spec. another mate has one and its waaaaay more, well, everything than the kicker one i have.

I could speak to my mate. we could make you one maybe, but postage would be a joke....

A couple of pics. The amp isn't for the sub, it drives the rear Alpine components, the Infinity has its own amp.

No i dont put anything in the boot, sounds are more important! To post images you need to upload them to a web site first, photobucket.com is what most use. When you've done that its dead simple to post a picture because it gives you the IMG string for each image which you copy and paste into your thread.

Check out photobucket, upload an image and it will all make sense. Click preview before you post the thread to make sure it has come out as it should.

i'l talk to me mate as we're thinking of starting to do installs for vehicals. done a cool install in a Saxo, and made every sub box weve needed. i'l have a word.

will you want it so you can take it out if you have to or are u after something a bit more permanant? with mine at the mo i can still take it out if i have to as the sides flex so i just unplug the cables and yank it out (it is screwed to an mdf base aswell that we cut to fit the whole boot so it doesn't fly about.

i'l see wot he says as were both quite busy. ur only down in cornwall aint ya, so you could come up and get it i guess?

:cool

That would be cool, but the logistics of getting it from you could be a challenge :)

Im based in Milton Keynes the majority of the time, I do drive about a lot for work so no doubt be down our way sometime (or one of my colleagues will be)

I suppose being able to take it out would be handy.

Yeah, im definitely got to get something sorted out. Getting my car back from Pip this week. Apparently he has relocated the battery to the boot to make room for the oversized rad ive had fitted - so will need to take that into account?

that shouldnt be a problem if you dont have a power cap. i have a cap one side of the box and the amp the other side. is it a normal rx7 size battery?

Slightly larger than standard I believe. I will know for sure this week. Have you got any pics of the install you have done?

How long would it take to do? Been thinking, perhaps I could drive down to you one weekend and help you do it? My GF has relatives in Bournmouth / Poole - anywhere near to you?

heres my install now its retrimmed. :D

looks good enough without having a shed load of mdf and fibreglass in there weighing the car down and still has a bit of room for general cr4p without the amp or powercap getting bashed about (need to hide my tyre weld somewhere else tho :eek like under the drivers seat) and it can also all be taken out real easily if needed.
