View Full Version : Oil Pressure (Lack off)

After fixing my oil leak, which was hidden by a slightly loose filter a year or so ago,(Oil down L/hand side from remote filter kit masked oil leak from Oil filler
extension tube) I still have no oil pressure on Idle with warm engine.
I got the leaks sorted and have aftermarket oil press. and temp. gauges to
back up the stock press. gauge. So its not another unreliable gauge prob.
With the engine cold pressure if fine but once warm it drops right down,a
small rev of the engine up to say 2k and the pressure comes back, the car
usses very little oil and runs well otherwise, any ideas anyone????
It helped slightly putting 20/50 (thicker oil) in right to top of dip stick
but this is as good as I can get it.
Any ideas or help please, :god

It is normal to have low oil pressure on idle.

I'll second that, would not be too concerned. mine sits on pretty much zero on idle.

A 20w50 oil in this weather is going to give you no protection when starting from cold.

Thanks for the replys, My low oil pressure with engine warm at idle is
1 cm2, on Greedy gauge and sensor, and between O -1cm2, on stock
gauge and sensor. But with COLD engine I see 6-7 cm2.
I was thinking there maybe a valve thgat opens up (or not) when temps go up? bit like a water thermastat ? or a pressure relief valve stuck someway??
or a seal somewhere that blows by when hot?
PS thanks Garry I'll change the Oil bach then.

Paul

There is an oil thermostat in these engines that opens when the oil gets warm.

My oil pressure is <1 bar on defi gauges at idle. I wouldnt worry about it. Does the oil pressure jump up when you place load on the engine or increase slowly? if it jumps up rapidly (i.e 0 to 3 bar), it could be a seal, if it increases slowly ish thats fine.

Look for blue sweet smelling smoke from the exhaust with the car warmed up. If you dont have any, stop stressing :)

Oil pressure gauge becomes a rev counter once the engine is at norm. temps
but completelly fine when cold-warm. :xconfused
I dont see any smoke and dont use any oil.
Deep down I think there must be a seal gone/going somewhere but I think I
was just hopping the could be an eassier fix (well just maybe)!
Thanks though I dont think it is quite so bad now.
Beter start saving spose. Instead of rushing to the bank.
Its been like it a year so I guess a bit longer wont hurt.
Thanks Paul..

Hi Paul,

I have carefully read your post and also had a chat with Carl to make sure and from what l read will now say/

"please don't worry".

In keeping with what you are telling us that its been like it for a year now I can tell you that I have seen many many engines over the years, big, little, piston and rotary suffer from low pressure when fully warm and then have perfect pressure when revved even slightly and run O/K for years after, and coupled with the fact that you have no increase oil usage and no smoke l will advise carry on using the car.

i.e. if it aint broke don't fix it.

Hope this helps.
