Just spoken to a guy about an rx7
its a 1989 - done about 107K on the clock
been done up , 16' alloys , koni shocks and stuff
says that its got 105 bar ( or what ever ) on each rotor on the comp test - now then is that good bad or what
he says its smokey when warm and wont get thru the emmission test for an MOT
is this down to the rotors being shot at , or it the OMP screwing up
could do with some URGENT advice on this - as i am very very very tempted to get it
also , how can you get a car home when it has no MOT or TAX - any help on this ??
thanks

Stu,
Only go for it if it is really cheap. Don't forget a new decent engine will cost you anything from £1500-£3000 depending on what needs to be replaced.
105BAR - would be nice, that reading is a little odd (far too high).
The thing making it smokey would probably be wear on the oil control rings in the engine, or wear on the side housings - which would either need to be replaced (along with the oil control rings etc.) or the side housings could be remachined.
Sounds like the engine will have to come out??? so budget for the worst.

hummm he only wants 350 for it - but i cant afford to spend mega bucks on getting it right
im sure he said that it was running 100 - 105 psi - which is about 7.xx bar - which according to rx motors is fine ???
he says that it doesnt smoke on start up , doesnt smoke when running
only smokes when it is warm at tick over - and because of this cant put it thru and MOT - apart from that he says it runs like a dream - it pulls fine , revs fine , no bangining etc... , he says it will pass an MOT no probs , apart from the emmission thingy ( unless you guys know a way round it - i didnt think that the emmission came into play with such an old car )
i thought it might have been the OMP being faulty - but then never realised that the control rods run in the engine - i thought they were on the out side
i really cant afford a new engine for it - id rather spend 2K and just get a TII thats been rebuilt recently - as these are available
it sounds like the car has got the TII kit on it , as he says its got Turbo II written on it - but no intercooler at the top of the engine ??!?
he said that he didnt want to sell it - but he cant get it thru an MOT thats why its soo cheap
oohhhh what to do
cant buy it if it needs 1000's spending on it - its not worth it then , but if its something simple i could get a bargain here
or is the theory that cheap isnt always good come into play !

The question is does he know how top Comp test it?
Has he just stuck the Comp tester in and turned it over? in which case its a fauls reading? On a boggo comp tester you have to remove the one way valve in the Tester and get somone to turn it ove whilst you watch the Bounces of the needle. Each bounce should be equal dont realy matter what at but over 70psi is good.
Sounds like the Oil control rings as the OMP is Ultra Reliable on the S4 NA's they are the Mechanical type or it could just be good old wear.
it sounds intrersting if it has T2 on the Wings? these stickers are VERY hard to get hold of, if you go look at it it should be easy to tell if its a T2 with a NA engine in it Check the Bodykit behind the Ft wheels is the two mount holes match the wings and if it has T2 seats etc . This could be part of the problem if they have not changed the EMS to a NA one?

insure it and then book it into an MOT station near your home. It is now legal to drive the car from its current location to the MOT station and back to its new (off road) storage.
The low level (visual only) emmissions tests are only applicable to <87 cars, this one should be tested at normal 1987 levels.

You have got to be Carefull doing it this way the Police are'nt always Dumb, They will check the Regestered owner.
That Puts you in a Situation they would become suspisious (Not your car and you dont work for the Garage) how do you prove you dont use it every day like that?.
If you want to be Dodgy and you are a Member of the AA, how easy is it to make a car a none runner?
Call me Paronoid but i like to keep as far away from the Law as possable, i have only had two brushes with them and it always costs Money.
How far away from your House is it?

i dont think it matters now guys - i think he has sold it - not bad for him only took him about 6 hrs from loot coming out ! - git !
i phoned him twice , and spoke to him , says he would phone back and never did - so im not going to chase him - did that twice already
the car was only 25 miles away !
oh well , the hunt continues ;)
i would have prefered a TII or a drop top anyways - but i thought whilst it was cheap
thanks for all your imput again , and has certainly provided some more insight into the RX7

its perfectly legal to do it that way. You can even drive a car with no plates to an MOT station and back with no tax , no MOT and no SVA as long as its insured via the chassis number.
the main thing is it must be booked into the garage and you must be heading towards that garage otherwise you will get the book thrown at you.
