Hi guys I recently bought an old copy(4th feb 1960) of The Motor Cycle magazine on e-bay because it had an interesting article on an Italian rotaru engine likened to the wankel.
It is a very small article but has a few cool photos. Has anyone heard of this before?
One quote that I thought was potentially mind blowing was this

" Imario's engine works on a similar principal tp the NSU-Wankel engine, though the rotor may have more than three flanks and the chamber more than two lobes."

That is a concept I have never heard of before.

Also hope that by quoting this magazine article i have not done bad things with reguard to copyright. If any mod thinks I might have please delete and ban me fopr life.! :evillaugh

There was alink on here a while ago on some rotors that have had more than 3 side, if I recall 4 and more sided rotors have been expirmented with, non ever in production?

Felix Wankel put together many many idea's into a compilation and accreddited many other types and ideas for rotary engines to the various inventors, among them were derivations of the same principle that he used for the 3 lobe rotor and two lobe housing, but with 4 rotor lobes, and 3 housings lobes, and so on.

I'm tempted to send a letter to Rolls Royce regarding their Rotary experiments, if I get a response I'll let you know :)

I have seen two of the Rolls Royce engines.

Typically cryptic Carl reply there!

Details Carl, details..?

Rolls Royce expiremented with the setup like no one else but Mazda! They built 1,2,3,4 rotor engines, diesel ones and some with more than 3 tips!

Nissan, General Motors, Mazda, Mercedes, Suzuki and Norton also dabbled with Rotary's (cant remember who else)

I think that the most prolific players with the Wankel engine are Curtiss Wright.
The made an engine with a rotor almost as big as a man,the only trouble was that it's flame front could not keep up with the rotor!
They made many multi rotor engines including 6 rotor ones.

Wow thats just ace! :3gears-lh

And sure enough I just found this - talk about engine bulge!!

I got this from the post Lisa did the other day (about MRC being the daddy! :cool ) Was one from the rotary top 100. I did mean to credit it, I'll have a look see when I get home.

This single rotor monster measured 31,500 cc's and produced 780 bhp at just 1500 rpm. I dont think that it would fit in a bike though :D

I dont think thats the biggest, I am pretty sure Rolls -Royce made a bigger one....

In the flesh the Rolls Royce ones appear smaller to me that the Curtiss Wright one.
The Rolls ones were of a big rotor and a small rotor combined. The big rotor fed the smaller rotor.

Ah thats correct, Carl. The big rotor was the supercharger for the small one.

I'm guessing that these huge rotoary engines went in to planes yeh? Any pitures of the planes themsevles? And why are the Rolls Royce engines such a big mystery? do they not let anyone see them or something? :)

I doubt they were for planes, Tanks and the like IIRC
