Good morning/afternoon Gents,

Does any1 have any idea of how much third party insurance is for a 3rd Generation rx-7 turbo with no or little mods..

Has any other Rx-7 owners taken the option of 3 rd party insurance rather than full comphrensive??

Just want to here your views/ideas.

I am 23, currently from Oz, here in the UK on the working Visa. Im thinking (well proactive) looking into getting a rx-7 imported from Jap.

I did the whole personal import thing back home and brought a 4.5 grade Pearl Yellow ZX TT.. Ahhhhhhh the feeling of going to the docks, to collect your baby.. now thats a feeling..!!...

Would like to do it all over again!.... Any ideas / suggestions would be apprecaitve..!1..

Cheers
Steve.

Thanxs Clive...

Yeh, having a little poke around...

Admittedly, my only major draw back is a loan and storage.

Loan shouldnt be a problem, however it will go against my father, big time.. When i got my ZX imported. I totally didnt tell him until the day i rocked up.. or else i would of heard his screams every day until it arrive.. i.e you brought a lemon etc etc.. how can u buy a car without seeing it first.. he was 68 at the time.. so you can imagine!!!..

But yeh... phsycial loan should be cool, got stable finances..

I will probly drive the car for a few road trips.. but i mainly what to store it.. until i get back home.. Turboed 7s are a rare thing now in OZ.,...

But yeh, future meets would be wicked.. Nothing better when you have 10 or so sport cars meet up.. and you all start your engines at once... I love that feeling..

Ahhhhhhhhhh Well.. What type of 7 do you own?...

Just had a quote from AON for the following:

1992 Imported type R
Uprated intercooler, clutch, exhaust, turbo piping, air filter

I'm 27.

Policy has no consideration of NCB

5,000 limited miles, must be garaged, conditional on having a second car to drive.

Quote was ~ £560

Should I shop around, or does this sound about right?

When I pressed them it seems to keep their premiums down they only insure cars that are garaged.

My RX7 is arriving in the UK around october time. Although I checked out insurnace before ordering I'm shocked as to how my quotes have come in much higher than some on the ones posted on this site.

Aon wouldn't insure me as my car is over 10 years old ('92) and will be used every day. (where's the fun in using it part time!)

Other qoutes range from £1900 with £350 excess to £1100 with £500 excess. I'm 32, married professional engineer with 4 years no claims and keeping the car in a locked, alarmed garage. I do have 2 sp30's from 2000 as I live in northampton.

wots the general crack with trackers & their requirement &/or premium reduction on AON policies?

Not sure for AON - they just told me they wouldn't insure my '7, so off I popped to someone else. It's a nightmare this insurance thing.

I've looked at them in conjunction with other companies and while many of them say it makes no difference some of them say they'll check and get back to me.

I've looked at two - one active and the other passive. The active tracker is just that - if it decides the car has been stolen - it alerts the HQ - who phone you up and ask if you're driving.

The passive one needs you to phone the HQ up and tell them your car has been stolen - then they activate it - I much prefer the active version - but it's around £130 more expensive than the other. I'm sorely tempted to invest in one of them.

Cheers,
Si.

Steve Burnett
9th September 2003, 09:52 PM
You might be better to fond a company that will not require a tracker unles you really want one fitted. I paid an extra £100 to go with a differant ins. company but saved approx £300 by not fitting the tracker.

SiCook
9th September 2003, 10:28 PM
At the moment I'd agree with you. I'm on bread and water for the next few months so I can pay for the car. I've only managed to find one place who'll insure the car - 1996 RX7 Type RS (did I say that right?) - the VIN plate has Type RS "Special Edition" on it - not sure what that means - I'm new to all this so...? I assume it's a Type RS so I have to get the insurance company to insure it as such. Many of them so far don't/can't/won't quote for a Type RS.

I need to save pennies just now so I'll reconsider the tracker when the insurance renewal is due.

Cheers,
Si.

Si

Got insurance for my RX after AON turned me down. Sureterm quoted me £950 with £300 excess but the car must have a tracker and cat 1 alarm!

I was always going to get a tracker fitted as I had a Rover 220 turbo Coupe stolen recently. It was stolen by someone who could only just reach the pedals and had no more imagination than to take it to a car park several miles away and do burn outs until the engine blew up.

The police didn't seem that interested and it seemed like too much hard work to actually find the criminal when handing out speeding tickets is a lot less hassle and brings in more revenue. I am now resigned to never knowing who trashed this car.

My view on trackers is that, with an active version, it might just make it easy enough for the police to be interested in catching the little bleeders in the car before they either run someone over or trash the engine. I might even get the car back in a reasonable condition. It's worth the money in my veiw even if it doesn't make the insurance cheeper. :(

Will promise to post lighter comments in future!

the flip side of that coin thou is a lot of people say they dont want their car back after sum punk has raped the arse off it!!!!
Personally it's purely an insurance issue although the more advanced ones do have nice bits like where u can see where for example a mechanic has been driving it while yer not around, but hey i'm paranoid i never let anyone drive my fast cars without me there. The amount of bull insurance companies talk will never surprise me. The car is insured as an import with them.
My previous insurance company said they never insured imports then next thing I know a couple of people on here (I think) have theit car insured with them.

I've been ringing around insurance companies and it is amazing how different the same insurer can be depending on who answers the phone!

I'm hoping to rent a garage from a neighbour too - perhaps I'll be able to insure with Aon then.

To make it more interesting I'm going to try and insure two cars - a veryheavily modified MR2 Turbo along with the Rex. The '2 TPF&T and I'll strip it down for a track day car. The Rex will be Fully Comp with the no claims bonus (seems it can't be shared between cars).

They're arguing that a RaceLogic Traction Control unit is a performance enhancement....!!!! Ho hum.

I'll post up who wins, but that'll be the end of Nov when the car lands.

Hi Jay,

l have spoken with Adam at AON this morning ( the clubs designated man ) and he has told me that providing the criteria are met i.e. the car is garaged and it's a second car over 25's will be insured O/K on limited mileage policy's.

Obviously if you are a club member with an MRC club Number this will help as well.

I can't help but feel somewhat dissapointed at the insurance situation. Perhaps the Club Policy that Dorset provide for the MR2 Drivers Club really is lightyears ahead of anything else.

Is there a formal Club Insurance Deal with anyone? I tried Aon and I'm appauled by their decision to insure cars that are garaged only.

I'll keep looking and find someone. It won't be Aon - and after my recent telephone call with them - it will never be Aon - garage or no garage.

Si.

Don't know about MR2 stuff but this is a very special scheme we have set up for Rotary's
( your comment sounds a bit like my Dads bigger than your Dad stuff ! )

AON is a full blown insurance Co and you will find that almost all 'classic' car policies will be insured via AON,
our scheme is direct and with no paybacks to the club as most clubs get a return for sending members to them .
We declined this and wanted every penny to go towards our members policies.

We have set this up so old Rotary's right through to RX-8's and heavily modified Rotary's with the only real exception being Nitrous ! can be insured this being dependant on the owner being eligible of coarse and armed with a membership number to qualify for the Mazdarotaryclub scheme.

Whilst not for everyone this will give you an instance , l rang last week on behalf of a 29 year old member for a 93 Type R who could 'only' get a best of £1050 but with AON under our scheme it was £540! ,and that should more than reimburse his £15 club membership fee !!!

BTW,
In Gaelic, Aon means "oneness".

http://www.aon.com/uk/en/

We also have other schemes set up with Chris Knott Insurance 01580 752961
and Norton Insurance 0121 2466060

Aon simply will not insure my car. The first question they asked me was "is it kept in a garage?" to which the answer is no. After that they couldn't get me off the phone quickly enough. When I explained I was a member of this club (expecting it to make a difference) they just talked over me.

I've moved from one Drivers/Car Owners' club to another. So far it's been my experience that an insurance scheme organised/supported by a Club is available to everyone in the Club - and the Aon scheme isn't.

I certainly wasn't aware that Aon wouldn't insure my car before I joined, I wasn't made aware when I sent my membership request off and I was only made aware by Aon saying we won't insure you.

It's good to see that for some people the £15 is a wise investment and I'm happy for them. Am I the only person who's joined the Club and doesn't have a garage in which to keep their car?

Tiz a bit harsh :( although to be fair there are a fair few threads knocking about with what you need to qualify for the AON deal & i'm not surprised there are certaint criteria u have to meet to qualify but the fact they dont, like many, want/need a tracker & even better it wont use my no claims bonus which is a bonus as well. I'm just hoping the Jasma zaust on mine will be quiet enough to quell any anger from the neighbours i rent garage off else it could get tricky  ;)

Hi Simon,

Spoken to AON and they will insure unlimited mileage on cars O/K but they will insist on the car being parked off road and not just being parked on the road side , due to the amount of money they have paid out in claims on this type of car in the past i.e. jap performance cars being damaged parked in the road.

To insure any one attached to a club is quite unlikely because as lt was pointed out to me when negotiating the scheme , worst case scenario would be a three time convicted drunk driver could join the club 'just' to obtain insurance and they would be duty bound to insure him because he is a club member !.

Please mail me privately with all your details and l will talk to them for you providing your not leaving it just parked on the roadside.

Hope this helps

Success!!!! :rollin I've managed to insure through my current underwriters and get the same cover as I had for the '2 (except that since it's no longer a club policy the track day cover has been removed - but never mind).

That runs until the end of April and then I should have somewhere off road to keep the Rex so I can try Aon again...perhaps....

I've another question about insurance though....

The car lands in Southampton on the 30th October, it should be with the company who are prepping/SVA'ing it in early November and I should collect it the first week of December.

I've been on the phone to them and they said in order for them to get an MoT I will have to send them my insurance certificate for it along with the Registration Certificate I have for it's Reg Plate.

That means I have to run the insurance from the 1st Nov, but I won't have the car - someone else will be driving it, and if anything happens - who claims against what? I've paid for the car (but not any of the duty) so I suppose technically it is mine already.

The prepping company are reptable so I'd imagine they'd have a dealers or traders motor insurance policy - isn't that enough to present in order to get an MoT or does it have to be a private Insurance Policy...?

Just wondering, there's no problem here. It's insured from when it arrives in the UK anyway, but I am interested to know what if...

Cheers,
Si.

From lots of personal experience with AON and from reading other people's problems on the MX-5 forums (AON have done a membership deal for the MX5oc for a good few years), it is my belief that they pluck the figures out of the air.

Call them two days in a row and if they don't realise you've done this you'll get two completely different quotes.

For my seriously modified (boosted from 116 BHP - 208) they're still best, but when I then asked over the rex they quoted me twice as much as A-Plan and refused to budge even an inch.

Oh and when I said the MX-5 was now going to be parked on the road when I was getting the quote I was told my premium would increase by 10%, but when I came to do the change it was free - go figure (though this time I'm not complaining).

SiCook

Problem for me is I was moving from one Club policy (MR2DC) to another (through this Club for the Rex). It looks like I have a buyer for my '2 which will be going soon, so now it's much simpler as I'm back to insuring one car.

Aon won't touch the Rex ATM because it's not parked on the drive and not parked in a garage. Anyway, been there, done that.

I've bought some time in which to find somewhere better to park the car - either a rented garage or secure off-road parking somewhere local. To be honest I'm not going to be parking the car on the street outside home anyway, I'll keep it at work (doesn't get much more secure than that) until I can park it somewhere closer to home.

I have the same experience though of the same insurers giving different decisions. I've also noticed what one insurer considers important another considers trivial.

There are examples on here with Tracker units and the like - one day it's important, the next it isn't. For me it's parking on the street. Aon won't insure the car if it's parked on the street - my current insurer said that if it's parked in a garage it will cut the premium by only 2% compared to parking on the street.

The down side is non-standard alloys +10%, non-standard exhaust, +10%, I daren't ask about the MazdaSpeed gearlever knob - just in case it adds another 10% (although I have delcared it :) )

I do wonder sometimes just how insurance would be if it were nationalised... There's a Govt requirement to have insurance (they passed the laws) but there's no Govt "standard" insurance available.... Hmmm... perhaps on second thought that's not a good idea ...:spank

Cheers,
Si.
