Hi Glenn,

I don't know Pete Harmston (Grumpe) that well, I just bought his car off him and proceeded to change pretty much everything on it!

This is the original Grumpe chassis that won the Summernats burnout competition, with a 13BT dropped in to it running on 26 x 15 x 8.5 inch tyres. The 152mph terminal makes it the 3rd fastest mph in Australia on this sized tyre! This was achieved with a horsepower figure now exceeded by over 100 rwhp!

I have attached an engine bay picture.

Good stuff!

It must be incredible to drive.

Who does your engines?

grump2
1st June 2005, 12:25 PM
It is pretty interesting, tends to move around a lot on the track! Craig Dyson from Dyson Rotary supplies the power.

The engine is a Series VI (FD) 13B, bridgeported and dowelled, it has 3mm Hurley seals, custom GSR manifold, 8 injectors, mechanical fuel pump, twin plate clutch, Jerrico 4 speed clutched box, strengthened tailshaft and 4.56 diff gears in a 35 spline Strange full spool 9inch diff. As mentioned, the car is untubbed, and has had a chrome molley cage fitted to it. The car runs on a M800 Motec system with CDI's and full data logging, so we know how long we carry the wheels etc.

Hope this provides a bit of information.....

Damien

You running C-16?

Excuse me for being dutch, but untubbed means no turbo right? But that can't be with that bloody HUGE intercooler and something that looks much like a BIG turbo in the engine bay..

But apart from, that it's still a fantastic car, with a spec to drewl on. :D

20B_boy
1st June 2005, 04:56 PM
No, untubbed means the wheel arches are not 'massaged' in order to get wide drag slick tyres in there. Untubbed means the arches are as the factory intended them so u can only get so much rubber under there. If you look at a tubbed car the inner arches nearly meet in the middle of the car - so 2 foot wide slicks will fit!

Ah, right, thanks for clearing that up. :D

thanks for posting up the piccies ... its a really well put together car by the looks of it.

how do you manage to get it registered on the road though ? I thought they were pretty strict over there. I assume it has an exhaust with silencers for the street ?

grump2
1st June 2005, 11:30 PM
It is seldom street driven, and when inspected we change the exhaust slightly.

The fuel of choice is Methanol, although the car can run on unleaded.

As for strictness, my other rotary (in the 1st gen thread) is legal, regularly street drive and makes over 600 rwhp!

The turbo by the way is a TA51R turbo and is not a ball bearing turbo. On methanol we are running between 18 and 28 psi, on C16 we used to run 40 psi!

And yes, this car is untubbed in that the inner guards on the back have not been touched at all. Many cars over here are taken too with a hammer etc to fit 9inch wide slicks under them, this one has 8.5 inch slicks and touches slightly both sides. The other effect of this is the slicks are only 26 inches tall as opposed to the 9inch which is 28 inches tall, which makes a big difference to stability!

grump2
24th October 2005, 08:28 AM
Having learned what happens when a brand new brake fails at the same time as a larger chute lifts you off the ground, we decided to re-engineer the car.....

It now has:- Lenco 5 speed
28 x 9 tyres
Twice the roll cage for rigidity (no issues in the crash, not even bruising)
Less boost and much much more power.

First time out it ran a 9.08@145mph with 80% throttle second to fourth and bugger all in top (125mph half track with wrong diff gears). There is some video of it at http://www.dysonrotary.com.au/Videos/grumpyjambo2005.mpg.

We changed the tune a little, and with both wastegates set to hold 0psi the thing actually made 18psi, and 588 rwhp on said 18psi!

grump2
11th December 2005, 12:39 PM
629.2 hp won our dyno comp, on 23psi!!!

I then took it out and with wrong first gear (way too tall) ended up running 9.068@153.53mph. We are running in Sydney next weekend as well, a long 12 hour tow to get there!

Just by way of an update, after NZ we freshened the engine and had a few minor dramas, followed by running an 8.85@158 in Sydney then oiling the left slick at 125mph!

After that meeting I decided to go 20B, so currently the car is being re-built from a bare shell by PAC Performance in Sydney (900km from my home) prior to its re-emergence in a few weeks. It is over 150kg lighter and will have up to 50% more horsepower with less boost and bucket loads more torque.

I will post some pictures when completed :WaveBye

We have now had our first meeting with the PAC 20B aboard, and discovered that with me in the car it has only lost 8 pounds

We did however get a bunch more horsepower. The first run saw me drive off the line with 3500rpm, and run 9.992@157mph. The second run was a bit better, 8.907@157mph.

The next morning we decided to try a little more boost and change the clutch which caught me unaware, stalling and rolling to 50 foot before restarting and running 16.6@164mph. Having equalled the Australasian (and we believe world) mph for an untubbed car we knew we had something special, and the fourth pass saw the car run 8.202 @ 164.15mph to set new ET and MPH records. Our fifth pass saw a line blow off and late that night another untubbed car ran 8.196@162 in great air to take our ET record, but we will regain it next week when we try some meaningful boost!:3gears-rh

Sensational mate! :) Tell me, how is the RX-2 for stability at 160+mph? I remember mine being quite good at high speeds - apart from the bonnet lifting around 10inches (yes!).

Incredible times and mph's, do you think it is good for 170mph?

Thanks again for taking your time out to post on here.

.ps Catch up soon, sorry - but been flat out with life.

grump2

The car was actually very stable and ran straight as an arrow. Backing off just before the line it was probably 2 or 3mph up on the 164 too, meaning world records all round!

grump2

As for 170mph, we have about 300rwhp left if we want it.........

After the last post we did a private practice day and with a slight lift managed to run 8.32@168.87mph, we also ran 8.38@164.23 a bit too fat and 8.28@168.16.

Come our Jamboree our first run was 8.235@159.07, a 9.42@165.05 with a bog and then our last qualifier saw us run 8.25@166.25 to anchor number one spot on a 28 x 9 inch tyre from the 35 car field.

First round of eliminations was 8.47@154.06 pulling the shoot early to run over my handicap, second round was a solo 8.41@166.60 and finally we red light in our round of 5 cars to lose with a 8.33@167.41.

The meeting also saw us win best presented crew of 328 teams, and take home the official national ET and MPH records for our new class, Street 289, having backed up within 1% at the meeting my 8.235 and the 167.41mph. We currently are number 2 outright in ET by .006 to a 12A :2eek but have plenty more to go in and have yet to run a clean pass!

Damien - to keep us up to date, assuming you now have the PAC 20B - what gearbox are you using. Going back in the thread you went from a 4 to 5 speed lenco (is that still the case?).

Here is an in-car video 8.27MB in size, 8.32 @ 168.87 :)

http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/general-videos/damien/Grump2_8.32_168.87mph_incar.jpg (http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/general-videos/damien/Grump2_8.32_168.87mph_incar.wmv)

The box is a magnesium cased low drag Lenco CS-3 with lightening rod shifters, one for each shift (ie 4 levers). We originally had a vertical gated Jerico 4 speed, and then went straight to this box this time 2005.

The box was built for a pro stock truck in 1998 and ran less than 6 passes, before being passed from owner to owner without ever even being sat in a car. I found it in NZ, bought it and the rest is history.

By now you should have a few more videos Glenn, and in the next 3 weeks we will make some more, including some shots from the rear of the car :WaveBye
