View Full Version : AON refusing to insure me: I am a member of mazdarotaryclub.com :Dream slipping away

Hi all,

this is serious now. AON were my last hope of insurance but they refuse to insure me, I got this far with them before they flat turned me down: -

Mazda RX-7
25yrs old
no previous high performance car experience

and that was it. This is after I told them I was a member.

I am quite distraught as Glenn Butcher said "they should be able to look after virtually all of our member's insurance requirements on production of their membership number".

The AON contact Adam Siviter is on holiday for 2 weeks, but the guy I spoke with said it would not make any difference.

I have tried quotes with a few other companies but once I declare the mods (99% cosmetic) the premium triples.

Can anyone offer any advice?

Chris,

What reason did they give you for refusal? I won't be able to do much from Oz. But Clive should pick this post up - hopefully he can do something for you.

Hi,

(I just emailed Clive directly.) They said that because I had no prior experience I would have to be over 30 years old for them to even talk to me.

Hi Chris,

I just checked some of the details, a quote here...

"Although they unfortunately are unable to offer insurance to our 17 to 25 year old members."

Are you > 25?

I think something must be wrong there, unless they changed their rules in the last few weeks. Wait to see what Clive comes back with.

I will be 25 on the 30th of July this year, I need the insurance to start around this date.

I am a little concerned as this was going to be one of my ports of call when I get My Rx (not a member yet but will be when I get the car) From what your saying Glenn I take it if you are 25 they wont touch you but if your 26 they will?

Chris, not sure if you tried admiral but they seemed ok with Mods when I tried them with a prospective purchase (Lowered suspension, 18" wheels, Aftermarket exhaust and Aftermarket Bonnet) I am about £700 for my current car and they only wanted an extra £83 to take me to the end of the term 30th Sept ( just over 3mths when I got the Quote).

By the way I only have 2yrs no claims as I've always been a named driver...

Clive (Admin) is currently chasing up my problem with AON at the moment, I will post the results, hopefully it will be good news.

rty elephant.co.uk they quote me 1300 om an fd and im 21 2yrs no claims:D

chrisBoid
17th July 2003, 11:11 AM
Elephant was 3-3.5k for an import FD worth £18k with a few mods (mostly cosmetic).

DRAGON
17th July 2003, 11:32 AM
Chris what age is your FD? and how much did you pay for it?

chrisBoid
17th July 2003, 11:35 AM
1996, paid £13k, but having more than £5K of work put into it.

DRAGON
17th July 2003, 11:39 AM
I would just say it is worth less and get a reasonable insurance quote. I doubt you could sell it for 18k. To get that money for a 96 it would have to have a serious kit and some very serious hp.

chrisBoid
17th July 2003, 11:42 AM
yes, that did cross my mind, but I have no clue as to how much to value it at. I just wanted to cover my @ss for the work that has (is being) been done to it.

I will ask the garage (Motormall) to give me an estimate of the current asking price.

Do you think a few £k less make a big difference to the insurance?

thanks.

davefrith
17th July 2003, 11:57 AM
no offence but as ross says I think you need to say its worth less, and it does make a difference to what you are quoted, try valuing the car as less, they will never pay out 18k anyway if you wrote it off

Point to note, elehant.co.uk make a note of body kits and wheels etc but don't actually insure them, although they don't tell you that

myself and girldfriend pay £1200 through elephant for my 96 kitted import, and i have heard of other people getting similar cheap quotes. I can't use AON either due to only being 23

PS. whats the 5k's worth of work you are having done??

chrisBoid

The big hitters are: -

Full leather interior
Mazdaspeed rear wing
C-West sleek headlight light

davefrith

sounds nice mate

I'd try valuing it at slightly less

but if it says mazda on it, is it really aftermarket modification? :)
point to think about i reckon

These guys charge you once for mods and then you can add ANY mod you want and you wont pay any extra. They insure 700bhp Skylines and they only pay the 1 set mod fee :)

Hi all,

Please DO NOT Chris's unfortunate experience with AON deter other people from using them as many of our members have been thrilled with the savings they have made .

l have spoken to Chris twice now and AON and the reason they will not insure him is that he needs to be actually 25 before they quote him he told them he has never a performance car and is upgrading from his Cleo !

As AON said would l insure someone coming from a low powered front wheel drive car then stepping straight into a high performance rear wheel drive sports car with by his own admission no prior experience !!!

As Chris knows l have put this out so as not to deter other people and have sympathy for his plight because at the age of 18 l had a high powered Jag then various powerful Yanks there after ,as l have said to him drive it for a year (with another company) then go back to AON with his experience and age and then he will qualify for his cheaper insurance with AON.

Chris the day you drive your great new car down the road you will realise their reasons for not wishing to insure you but also whatever it takes to get you on the road it WILL be worth it just to get behind the wheel of your wonderful RX-7 .

l hope this has now clarified a bad situation properly.

Hi all,

yes Clive is absolutely right, this is just my experience and should not deter anyone from checking out AON for insurance, after all they have a duty to protect their clients!

Just for info, the best quote I have got is £2700 from Chris Knott. This is £1500 more than I was hoping to pay (who would have thought cosmetic changes would make so much difference!) and I have to think _very_ carefully about whether I can stump that kind of cash up every year. I expect it to go down after 1 year, but by how much I don't know.

Time for some serious thinking...

thanks everybody for all your help. :)

Hi all,

just thought I'd let you know that I will not be driving away my RX-7 at the end of this month. The cheapest insurance I can get is £2700 (with £500 excess) from Chris Knott, and being told it would only go down by £200-ish after 1 year - I cannot justify paying that per year.

Here are the insurance details for anyone wanting to compare: -

25 years old
No previous performance car experience
5 years no claims
£16k RX-7 RS
Cat 1 alarm & imobilliser
Cat Q Tracker
Garaged
Mods [bumper, wing, skirts, alloys, sleek headlight kit, 99 spec side lights, clear side repeaters, leather interior, rear exhaust section, cold air induction, carbon fibre look door handles and instrument panel]

thanks.

Chris.

Hi,

I've tried a few of the ones that people recommended: -

A-Plan
Admiral
AON
Elephant
Liverpool Victoria
Tesco

None can beat £2700 that Chris Knott offered.

davefrith
21st July 2003, 01:06 PM
Either you are

Living in a VERY highly rated area
Disclosing mods you don't need to, such as clear side repeaters and carbon fibre inserts
Valuing your car too highly - Obviously I have not seen your car so can't comment really, but 16k is a lot of money for a 96 RX-7 so maybe its worth looking at that
Maybe you could look at putting the car in your other halves name or a parent etc, theres always ways of making it cheaper

I am 23 last week by the way with 0 no claims and pay about £1,300 FC

Just my 2p to try and help you

Hmmm,

this is the problem I have found with insurance, wildly different quotes, no consistency. The £16k figure is based on the bought price and the work I am having done to it, which comes to more than £16k.

As with what mods to declare, I have no clue as to what I should or shouldn't declare, but form what I've heard, I'd rather not give the insurance company a reason to not pay out if it came to that.

I'm sure you'll be pleased to know that I have sorted insurance now, for £2142 from Crossgate Insurance. This is easily the best quote I have had and digestable enough (just!)

I will be sure to post some pics of the final product when I get it, so you can judge for yourself how much it's worth :)

thanks all.

Unexpectedly, after telling Crossgate Insurance (Houghton), that I would be doing less than 6000 miles per year, my premium went to down to £1206 (from £2142). This is bang on what I first expected to pay.

The no claims aren't protected (that would push the premium up to £3013), but I'll just have to live with that. :)

Hmmm looks like to get an insurance comp. to insure the rx7 is no easy task.

Was wondering what would the premium like for a foreigner (Malaysian) like me with no previous high performance car experience and age 26yrs old ?

just a mention.. have you tried Adrian Flux ??

We've got 3 jap performance cars insured with them and never had a problem... and one of those is an import... maybe worth a phone call at least ?

Just a thought but if you were to fit a '99 spec bodykit to a pre '99 rx7 would that be classed as a modification? And if so woukld it put as much onto the premium as any other kit? Also if you have a bodykit that gets stuffed in a crash would the insurer pay for a new modded kit or the standard one for the vehicle?

J4P RX
1st November 2003, 11:00 AM
If they bodykit is declared then it will have to be replaced I suppose, but considering the cost invovled it probably just increases the chance of them writing off your car.
