and making it road legal in the states would be near impossible and involve crash testing a few

Hi Mike,
Why is it soo difficult to import & register a cosmo or a fd in the States ? Surely it can't be emissions with all those 5 & 6 litre vehicles ove there ??

I believe its the emmisions , they are very strict on new cars + the crash test regs are very strict ( the 1st gen had to have the rear seats removed for the US market as it failed the stricter rear impact tests)
I'm not to clued up on it but I have read about motorex in the states who import skylines and they have to modify loads of bits to make them legal + they had to crash test the cars too.

Motorex FAQ
In order to import the vehicle to the US legally it must be imported though Motorex,Inc. .The cost for us to legalize a car for you varies from $16,000 - $25,000 depending on the year of the vehicle. This does not include shipping , bonds ,tarriffs , custom brokerage fee , and associated shipping fees.
We have had to go though all of the mandatory requirements for the DOT and EPA . Including crash testing , air bag testing , and OBD II to meet the Code of Federal Regulation requirements. Since Nissan did not perform any of these requirements , we have independently completed the research and development. The pricing reflects our cost of reseach and development.
There are ways to import vehicles into the US. Normally they are imported as substaincially similar to a US model. Then what happens is anything that is different between the US DOT legal vehicle and the vehicle from overseas would need to be changed to be the same as a US model. For example - headlights , tailights , mph speedometer cluster. The DOT no longer accepts right hand drive cars as being substaincially similar to the US model unless the manufacturer provides information to the DOT stating the vehicles are substancially similar.
Additionally the engine in the vehicle must be available in the US or the engine must be certified for the US.
In order to protect our business interests, research and developmentcosts, the answer to this question is confidential. Some of the basic items that are changed are things such as US emissions, speedometer , crash structure , lighting , US VIN , warning , and information labels.
