Does anyone know the mounting depth for the front speakers in an FD3S? I'm looking at getting some Kenwood Dual Mags, which come in 2 mounting depth sizes; 50mm and 60mm. If the 60 mm ones would fit, I'd prefer to get them as they are rated at a higher 50W rms.

I'm sure it's 65mm. AFAIK Kenwood coaxials are the only speakers that will fit in the front so I think you wll be ok with the 60mm ones.

just put some vibe 5.25 speakers and they needed a mdf spacer it was either 8 or 9 mm to clear the window

Turns out the correct diameter size (5.25") kenny dual mags are 48mm deep! Thats so small! How can they be as good as theyre sai to be with magnets that size?!? Wont complain.

Blimey, got some mb-quartz RS218's in the door (6.25in). Not very deep though. Housed in an mdf spacer / adapter ! Got 6.25in in the back too, but that required some cutting on the original brackets and an mdf spacer.

When you say you got 6.25"s in the fronts with an MDF spacer, do you mean you needed the spacer to bring the speakers into the car to allow for window clearance? - Or do you mean it needed a spacer as the original speaker whole was too wide and the 6.25" would just fall through?!?

If its the former of the two, does that mean that 6.25" (or 6.5" preferrably) fit without any cutting needed?

Cheers

Depends on the size of the magnet. The setup on the mids up from are sat on a peice of mdf and is mitred at 45 deg to allow for the shape of the basket. It just about fits. Never had to worry about the position of the window when it came down :p

They are very shallow speakers though, so that helped alot.

Oops, third car i've fitted them in and only realised that they are 6.5in  .They do fit though. But arn't made anymore, where about 280 a set when i bought them. Using some different tweeters though, some reed type that are stuck to the dash.

I have another set of panasonic cj-sps177 in the back, again with reed tweeters on the back shelf and 6.5in speakers in the place of the orginal speakers.

Gave away a nice set of mb quartz speakers with my last car, low price range components that where 6.5in, i think they may have fit too !

Need to get my amp installed, but its a big heavy lump !

So 6.5" Kenwood Dual Mags with a 60mm mounting depth would fit, but would need an mdf custom bracket?

Sorry to be repetetive, but I just want to be sure they will fit before purchasing them.

Thanks

Sorry, can't find the manual to see what the dimensions are for the mb quartz. Without taking the door to bits i can't really say yes or no. Do you own the speakers or are you looking at ordering them ? You will need to make an mdf adapter, but that is just using both shapes and then chamfering the hole to make it fit.

Hi Shaun,

I havent purchased them yet. I know the smaller 5.25" will fit without any modifications to the door, but I'd prefer to get the 6.5" as they will obviously perform better. I'm sure 60mm mounting depth wont be a problem and I dont mind making an mdf spacer, so I think I'll just buy them and let you know when I get them and get a chance to take the door card off!

Thanks for your help so far mate. :cool

No problem, sorry if ive not been alot of help. They do fit though, is a squeeze for my mbquartz, but they are in the door ! Need to foam the door skin i think in foam, vibrates for fun !

Just build the mdf spacer up off the original speaker mount.

Your spaced out 6.5" speakers that you've managed to fit, are they still behind the original door trim?

I've got some 6.5" Alpine components, but I figured by the time I'd spaced them up they probably wouldn't fit under the original trim, and I'd much rather keep everything hidden and original-looking when I start fitting it... I've had a whole stereo install stolen before and it's really not funny.

I've also got some 6x9s, has anyone managed to squeeze those into the 5x7 slots at the back? I suppose I need to pull some of the trim off and have a look at it all, but I'm reluctant to get started until I know I'm actually going to do it... trim is a pain in the arse to play with sometimes. Or most times!

The speaker depth area is very shallow. It measures approx 7cm from the window when lowered fully and the door speaker cover. I had purchased some Kenwood 17cm Dual Mags with a 6cm mounting depth. After careful measurements, a 6mm deep mdf bracket and the removal of the plastic 'wall' directly behind the mid speaker, it just sat perfectly.

6 x 9's are a similar situation. They do fit, if you buy the correct ones with a shallow mounting depth and are willing to create an MDF bracket to correct the size -some cutting of the metal bracket may also be required.

If I'm going to buy speakers, I'll probably just get ones that will fit anyway. What I'm looking at is some stuff I already own, quite nice Alpine kit from a few years back. I'm pretty sure that none of it could be described as 'shallow' though, so it sounds like I might be out of luck there.
