Right been on the phone for a while to various companys. I hope to christ someone can suggest somewhere that might sort me out a bit better. My details are-

Age- 22
NCD- 4 years
Live in a FY2 area
Cars on a driveway
got 3 points for speeding (sp30) in 1998, don't think they care anymore
10,000 miles a year

And as a demo i have tried two cars-

uk 1993 car valued at £8000 totally standard with a cat one alarm.
grey import 1993 type rz valued at £8000 totally standard with a tracker monitor.

so far-
Directline (0845 246 8701) won't insure me until i'm 25

Chris Knott (0800 917 2274) is getting back to me

Tesco (On Internet) have quoted me £2112.60 for a fully comp quote with protected NCD, legel cover and temperary replacement car, £250 excess on the import, and £150 cheaper on the uk one. Thats nearly £200 a month!!

www.confussed.com have taken my details and are getting back to me.

still got adrian flux, sureterm and aon to ring, not looking good.

Thanks

Matt

Matt,

Have you tried using an independent insurance broker. You usually find loads of them advertised in the back of WhatCar etc...
advertised as specialising in insurance for performance vehicles.

You give them your details and they do all the leg work of phoning various insurance companies on your behalf. They introduce you to the actual insurance provider and make a comission on the deal.

They can be very competitive on price and do save you a lot of hassle. You just have to be a little more careful over the policy small print cos they can be quite restrictive to get the price down. For example, I got a very good quote one time but the restriction was that the car had ALWAYS to be parked in the garage between 12 midnight and 5 in the morning, so, I wouldn't have been covered if I went on a driving holiday and the car got stolen during the hours of darkness.

Ciaran.

My insurance is based on a Jap Import.
Insurance is a funny thing, they have a reason behind everything even if it makes no sense. (eg adding on a more mature driver can actually reduce the premium. This is true, I have done this for 4 years)

I would second that on my car just now (Honda Prelude For sale if anyones interested) I was quoted £900 for insurance , put on my mum dad and girlfriend and it came down to £700... Me thinks I might be a liability!!!!!
That was with Admiral.

Hi All,

For the 'elephant' people, (steve) are your cars modified or standard??? (suppose i'm really asking, declared modified or standard)

Conehead- i've tried that confussed.co.uk place that claims to be a insurance hunting agency, you know its bad new when they cant find any insurance for you!!! I'll get a copy of an automag and go shopping for brokers as you suggested, thanks.

Everyone- I added my mum onto a tesco policy (online) just to see what happens and she recently has had a no fault claim and a speeding offense which i think didnt help, put the price up by £300.

Thanks everyone for your help, if the price doesnt go down a fair chunk i doubt i will be able to afford a seven and that will be disasterous for myself.

Thanks

Matt

Out of curiosity, if you cant get the Rex insured how did you manage to get your GTI-r insured with all those mods?

Yep, lots but no-one appears to be serious enough to come and get it. Strangly enough, most of my interest has been from overseas, finland, norway and sweden. Sweden fella being the most interested and was due to come over and collect after nearly 2 months of email conversations and picture exchanging.
Ironically though, and it has to be said, with a certain amount of satisfaction on my behalf, he choose a lesser standard GTi-R over mine because it apparently had a stronger gearset than mine. It then proceded to break its 'stronger gearset' on his drive home to Sweden. Upsetting for that lad, but i knew i had the better car, but it still hasn't helped me sell mine yet.
Couple of current gtir owners are very interested and i believe one of them has his car up for sale with the intention of buying mine the second his goes, he's taken all my contact deals and sounds hopeful, but good gtir's are hard to sell at the moment cause there are so many bad, cheap ones bringing the value and standards down now.
I think it will go, i'll just have to wait for the right buyer i think, needs to go to an enthuiast and i would be very unhappy if i sold it to a non-enthuiast, i have put a great deal of time, care, blood and sweat into it and i don't want some newly promoted nova/saxo driver wrecking it.

not taking any risks on the Rex though, i want it properly insured, and i'm going to make sure i properly look after it. Worried about the rotary engine obviously mainly because its new to me, but i am looking forward to the challenge of learning how it works and i would like to open it up myself and learn how to rebuild them. But i'm guessing that i will need special tools for this which may balls up my ideas

Thanks

streetdragster
15th July 2003, 12:57 PM
your right they have gone up, £5000 with a tracker and a cat one!!! they are trying not to cover the imported car market apparently, then they put me through to another company that deal with imported cars more called 'Alan & Alan' who just said, in a rather contracending tones might i add, '22, rx7, wouldn't cover you mate'

Running out of options here, getting worried.

Thanks

new update-

Greenlight- 'do not offer new business policies on japanese imported vehicles'

Liverpool Victoria- 'have a minimum age restriction on the 1993+ Mazda rx7 of 30 years of age'

Directline- 'Need the policy holder and any drivers of that particular vehicle to be 25+'

Elephant.co.uk- Were around £5000 and are 'not insuring imported vehicles' and recommended me to-

Alan & Alan - '22, on an Rx7, can't cover you mate'

Chris Knott- You need to be 25+

Adrain Flux- Can't quote me on that vehicle

Tesco- Internet Quotation- £2112.60

Not looking good, any other suggestions anyone?

Thanks

Tesco seem like your best bet mate

Judging by what I pay and friends with similar high performance
cars your Tesco's quote is actually very good!

Remember you are 22 with 2 years no claims drivng a very highly rated car
I doubt very much you will end up getting insured for much less than that

If no one else will insure you then bite the bullet mate and pay it, might be your only option

also insurance companies tend to make stuff up as they go along

I'd have to agree with Dave; £2K for a 22 year old with only 2 yrs NCB sounds quite reasonable...

Now thats alot better, Sureterm direct have just quoted me on a import type rz (1993) for £1499 fully comp with full legal cover, courtesey car etc etc. Forgot to ask about protected NCD but the car only needs a Cat one alarm and immob.

Back on track for rx7 ownership

Thanks

Cool! :cool

Im with sureterm too, and can report that the claiming system wasnt too bad despite being made to work to get a reasonable offer out of them. Still, wont say too much as I havnt got any cash yet or anything.

The thing to watch which I didnt realise at the time, is that its a classic scheme which means the car needs to be 10yrs old. This was ok as I already had the car which was a 92 so I didnt realise. Now I come to needing a new one, I can only get one over 10yrs so this limits my choice a little. I can live with it though for being able to have one :)
