I think Safety Device used to make one ... Having said that a mate rang up for a roll cage for his Lada and safety devices reckoned they didn't have the jigs and so he'd have to buy a custom one (about 3 x the price  ) even though they supplied the one in our team mates car

RX3
RX7 Mk 1
RX7 Mk 2 - sunroof
323 2 door hatch 1977-80 RWD
323 Hot Rod 1986-90
323 sunroof 1980-86 FWD (inc. 4x4)
323 1986-90 - non sunroof
MX5

hmmm I wonder what they mean by Mk2 ? 2nd Gen or MK2 (1981-83)

would be nice if they had the Jigs to make one up.

I will get in contact.

If you dont mind me asking how much does a typical 6 point cage usaly go for?

Chris

about £500 and upwards If I recall correctly

If you are fitting it don't forget to weld reinforcing plates inside the car (at least 6" x 6" x 3mm thk ) at the four points on the main cage and slightly smaller plates on the rear stays.

We weld our reinforcing plates in with a 90 degree (ish) bend that takes the plate up the side of the inner sill.

I would do a search in google for Kirk Racing. They already make them up to fit FC's.

Ok, if i use my Cage as harness mounts (basicly use the Lower cross pipe or Rear Strut brace to mount the Shoulder straps) would it be legal for road use?

I ask becouse i have just Bought 2x 4 point Harness and the guy i bought them off sugested it for ease of fitting.

Cheers

yes perfectly road legal ,most bolt in cages don't come with that bar as standard though ... you'll have to sepcify it when you order I think.

They have given me a list of all the bits i can buy, So with a bit of luck it should be easy.

They are pretty resonable prices ... I would recomend fitting door bars even though they make access a little more difficult ( depends what shape they are but some have a bend to make it easier to get in and out)

Chris, re the 4 point harness, they are only legal for road use IF they have the little E in a circle marked on them. If they dont, they aint legal!

Dan

MikeLMR

don't need an E-mark to pass an MOT

Grizzly

Where will it be on the Harness?

I have two Sabelt FIA Approved Professional 3" 4 points, i went for the best quality ones (you know seat belts and all) but i cant for the life of me see an E on them? Should it be on the harness itself?

Ok is there two types, one ment for the road and one just for Track?

The only thing i can see on them is "Comform to FIA standard 8853/98-8854/98"

Chris

Ok Panic over.

BTW are Sabelt any good? Sounds daft but there was loads of them, i asked the sales guy who said as long as i get a good quality Buckle and 3" Straps i'll be fine. So that what i did. ;)

some of the non FIA ones have an E mark

You do not have to have an E mark on ANYTHING for an MOT (My dad works for the Vehicle Inspectorate)

as far as i know there is the really good fia approved one with the fancy buckle. this is not road leagl. then there is the clunk clic type that are. my brother is a mot tester

MikeLMR
10th July 2003, 09:19 PM
nope they are still legal

http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/Garage/9479/f1interior.jpg

not concrete proof I know but lots of supercars come fitted with them as standard.

If your MOT tester fails them ask him to point out exactly where in the manual it says that they are not legal

MikeLMR

This should solve it ... just had a look in the latest manual and this website is up-to-date

SEAT BELTS (http://www.ukmot.com/manual/5-1.htm)

No mention of E markings but must have a British Standard

I'm really confused now

EMMISIONS TESTING (http://www.ukmot.com/manual/6-4.htm)

MOT INSPECTION MANUAL (http://www.ukmot.com/manual/5-1.htm)

if anyone wants there own manual the ISBN number is 0-11-552074-0

Main thing is a car is safe and I'd rather be in a car with FIA approved belts than in a car with standard belts ... Stupid Red tape

say something about types on page 4-9. i couldnt find it.

MikeLMR

right my dads done a bit of ringing round at work (thanks)
and has the following info.

Note 3:
An adult harness belt comprising a lap belt and shoulder straps bearing a British standard marking is an acceptable alternative to any of the seat belt types listed.

An E marking is an acceptable alternative if no BS marking is found on the belt ( I think only older belts will have BS markings now)

FIA markings are not currently accepted but if someone can proove that the FIA standards exceed the BS or European standards they will change the information to include them :cool

It may mean your MOT insector has to ring the VI to confirm this but in theory they should be legal (WRC cars pass an MOT so in theory the FIA belts should be approved already, might just take some more digging)

"the camshaft belt is in satisfactory condition"

there are probably hundreds of phrases like this but would that not mean that the rotary should fail:rollin :rollin :rollin

well i think we got a bit tangled up there. we were confusing legal with MOT able. i spoke to my brother and he said ,, as you did, that as long as its mouted properly and there are no frays in it and it fastens then it will pass an MOT. the law says fia is not exepable. so you will get through an mot but if your stopped by a smart copper he might be able to nic you.

a good example he said to me was that for MOT purpose , you have to be able to reed a number plate and then it will pass a test. if it was pink with green letters but you could reed it then thats good enough but i dont think the old bill would like it.:D

its like lights having to work,,,, if it doesnt have any then they dont have to work:cool

yep spot on ... the MOT is just a test of the condition of the vehicle ... otherwise testers would have to be checking all the lights for E-marks and other parts etc. etc.

now SVA tests are another thing ... for example you can pass an SVA with bald tyres as long as they are the correct speed and load rating ... and you can pass an MOT with tyres that do not have the correct speed or load rating but have enough tread !

like I said ... red tape :reallymad
