You didn't tell me, but your photos left clues.

No news from RX yet. I've been phoning them every Monday for the last 3 weeks. So today I decided to give it a rest, just in case Tim gets :censored::censored::censored::censored:ed off with me pestering him, and decides to leave a loose 10mm nut in my air box! Are you going over to Worcester to get the V5C? I'll be interested to see how long it takes them to send the docs out, or even if they do it for you on the spot.

hi bob *cough* er, mike. :)
how's mull at this time of year? bet it's brass monkeys already.

well, i'm thoroughly ashamed to admit it, but the 3's not mot'd.
story so far: rolled off back of the truck in the photos and pushed into garage. battery flat as a pancake. pretty common i'm told after a long ferry journey.
soo charged up the battery and brap! - first turn :) and it sounds awesome! bowel-shifting.
so i booked an mot. then i managed to flood it discovering that a new battery was required.. (felt like a bit of a :censored::censored::censored:, but i guess the learning started right there). missed the booking.
followed the excellent instructions in the tech forum to de-flood, stuck in 4 shiny new plugs (which halfords obviously didn't stock - so sparkplugs.co.uk - good price, but add 5 days:rolleyes: ) and a new heavy-duty battery and brapp:D
in the meantime the little 1000 needed mot'd and bingo! - FAIL on the exhaust back box which had already been repaired before and is about the rarest component on earth to replace. well over here at least.
but, rich (the other member of FA3UK;) ) to the rescue! he had a brand new one in his garage which he even drove half-way to sell me. bloody legend.
and the other thing taking all my time is the impending :censored::censored::censored::censored:storm at work - the new retail website i'm currently project managing goes live next week, so from here right through christmas will probably be total madness.
still, nuff with the excuses. like i say, ashamed.
promise i'll get it done soon.

gord:D

travellinbob
23rd November 2004, 08:47 PM
Hey good to hear it is all ok at least. Didnt think you would be able to get too much driving time anyway with all the salt they dump on the roads around the uk. Mull is bloody freezing, and after around 3 weeks of constant horizontal rain it is wearing a bit thin. And no money whatsoever for car stuff is very frustrating. Still, should be able to sell of my old volvo soon and have a bit of a cash injection for the project.
cheers.

I am building an off road buggy out of my old 250cc road bike, and a custom trailer for the moggy. Oh and my volvo.damn, I really do have too much stuff on. Come on Gord mate!

I thought I would be way behind you, but after my fourth visit to the DVLA yesterday for an inspection, read as 'look under bonnet at vin number', I'm now up and running in! It was my first drive of a rex on the way back from RX Motors on Monday night, very nice indeed. Kind of like my wifes MX5 really.

If there's anything I can do to help Gord, let me know.

thanks simon, appreciate that. :)

but until i stop doing the 14 hour days the job requires at the moment, things may crawl along:(
should even out in a couple of weeks hopefully... by then i'll either have an mot, or will know what needs done for one. then i may need some help... ;)

tbh i'm a bit precious about her and don't expect i'll be using her much 'til it's dry and there's not f salt on the roads anyway..

hey maybe you or someone out there who doesn't use their rex daily could advise me - how often should i go start it up when locked up for winter? don't seem right leaving it for long in this cold.. i worry..

hi guys.
quick update while i'm still buzzing:D
just took the car for 1st drive across town to it's mot appointment. sounds awesome! ear to ear grin.

it's a bit bumpy on tight-ish cornering - could that be the diff?
and loads of electrics don't work - indicators, wipers, ... hopefully just fuses.
but at least by the end of today i'll know what needs done.
one step closer...

gord:D

MikeLMR
2nd December 2004, 04:02 PM
what sort of diff has it got ? a real tight limited slip diff will 'skip' around tight bends as it starts to lock up.

sounds like it was worth the wait, just imagine what it'll be like it the good weather (well what good weather we get)

flectron
3rd December 2004, 12:29 AM
hi mike
just checked the mod details - it's got a 'locker diff' which sounds pretty LS to me..

anyway, it failed it's mot today; partly cause of electrics- indicators and stuff- not too worrying, i'll root through the fuses, then electrics and stuff, but more worrying because it's too loud... :(

so, i asked the mechanic 'what's the limit?' and he said, 'there isn't one, just go out onto the street and listen to 'normal' cars and that's what's acceptable- your's isn't. it's up to the examiner's discretion'.

now, i always thought there was a defined limit than that?? in decibels or something?? i kinda hope he's right 'cause maybe i could just find a more sympathetic examiner ;)

anyone got any advice? i'd really like to keep the exhaust - it's a 3" stainless... and the car sounds amazing as is...

gord:D

Gman
3rd December 2004, 07:38 AM
There is no noise limit on an MOT, i didn't think they could fail it just by the examiner listening to it. Mine is too loud really but the examiner said the was nothing he could do to fail it.

Gman
3rd December 2004, 07:39 AM
Could you use a baffle to keep the noise down just for the MOT.

MikeLMR
3rd December 2004, 12:26 PM
there is a limit in the construction and use regulations, pretty sure its 101Db at 1/2 a metre but it would be wise to check. Any kit car forum should be well clued up as thats what they base the SVA test on.

Another option is to find a more modified car freindly MOT station, or bung a load of wire wool up the exhaust, try not to rev the car while driving it into the MOT and call it good (happens all the time in stage rallying but cheating the sounds regs is frowned upon in these PR mad days :( )

I hope you get it sorted.

MikeLMR
3rd December 2004, 12:30 PM
oh and the jumping about is most likely the diff, locking diffs are little brutal to say the least, they allow some slip and then lock 100% be carefull as once the rear diff is locked the car will either push on into a corner (understeer) or will oversteer due to the fact that the rears are now locked together and no differential effect is possible

flectron
3rd December 2004, 03:25 PM
thanks mike.

think i'll take care until i get used to it. :)

i think the first thing i'll try re mot is a more sympathetic examiner. may bung some steel wool up there anyway - thanks for the tip. ;)

if that don't work then i'll have to look into a new exhaust. i can always stick this one back on for special occasions...

sooo, anyone know any mod-friendly mot test centres in or around gloucestershire..?

Remember also if you plan to take it on track a lot of them are 98dB limit nowadays!

Hiya folks,

Your right martiny, its a metallic racing green (respray) the interior is mint reskinned etc, all the electrics redone, even got central locking and 3 point alarm and immobiliser fitted. Now for the goodies

engine is a 12A turbo, single dizzy (250bhp- i'll confirm this when i get my hands on it) supra 5 speed, heavy duty clutch, heavy duty tail shaft, and some sort of bullet proof diff.

its running on 16x8's on the front and 16x10's:D on the rear!!!. he has loads of parts that are coming with it, plus he can get more.

Regards OLSKOOL

it is an original RX2, apart from the listed mods above, plus its got a 3" stainless system :cool

the guy is selling it because he needs the money for a house. he has been reluctant to sell it (took him 8 months just to bite the bullet)

its been built for show etc, plus to be driven, its got anti sway bars fitted, uprated suspension, plus uprated breaks and stuff.

OLSKOOLROTAR

Hey Martiny,

I know of a 12A plus gearbox going for £400 plus ancilliaries, for ya RX2 (thats yours with the ford-YUK-engine isnt it) if ya after 1

Martiny
7th December 2004, 03:42 PM
Ohhhhh, pleeease put the standard wheels on!!!! Pleeeassee!!!!

Yes, mines the one with the wrong engine in. I can get an engine + box cheaper than that.

I already have RX7 engine and gearbox, the spares might be easier to get.

If I go RX-2 engine, then I have few issues:
- no Propshaft and propshaft bearing and housing( But i will have to modify the 7 prop shaft to fit somehow anyway)
- probably have to rebuild the engine first.
- Radiator? I will have to make it fit a 7 radiator, but I suppose I can get the hoses made somewhere. Oil cooler, too.

- Carb and manifold - does the RX7 one fit?

If I go with RX7 engine -
- Have to make mountings or get a 74 RX2 cross-member somewhere ( unlikely!)

- Have to cut the tunnel for the gear lever .

- Have to figure out coils and ballast resistor wiring.
- Already have (supposedly) good engine waiting.
- Easier to get spares?

I am halfway between deciding, the correct motor would be nice, but the RX7 engine is probably easier for me right now.

Havent decided yet! 3 month old baby, so I have other priorities right now!

OLSKOOLROTAR
7th December 2004, 03:54 PM

In South Africa they came with a very high backed seat, thats what I really want. Looks like your car hasnt got them, though.

I'll ask him for you Martiny, I think i know the 1's you mean are they the 1's with meshing in the head rests?

No, no mesh, the back goes slighlty tapered in ward near the top, and then the top is tilted slightly forward.

I'll try a nd find a picture somewhere. I have a US parts catalogue, but their seats had a seperate headrest.

Nice to hear that your plan is coming together. Getting maried in vegas then coming home to the 2. Could life get any better? no i didnt think so.:D
I also think that you should start a new thread for your car and the experience of buying it. The info will be priceless on the importing and also on the car.
cheers, and all the best.

I appologise for hijaking the thread a bit but Martin I may be able to help regarding seats for the '2'.
I have a pair of 1000/1300 vinyl ones which I remember to be similar

These have a leatherette type finish - I think the RX's were "smoother"

As far as Old Skool goes - roll on Rotorstock:D

sorry martin, just spotted this.
i haven't yet. been sorta swamped at work and wanted to sort electrics first. doing that this weekend - found a couple of blown fuses, got a bunch of new ones, and i'm about to go and stick em in. fingers crossed...

i've also got a couple of leads for local garages that i might try - i'm a bit nervous about a 2 hr drive unregistered and besides, i'm not sure when i'll have time for a day away:(.

thanks for the contact tho, i may very well need it.

ok progress.
fuses sorted out almost everything - wipers & washers, dash lights, horn, indicators...
but, still no hazards. AND when the hazard button is on, no indicators...?
anyone got any ideas what might cause this?
cheers

the hazard switch is quite complicated if I recall correctly.

When not on the indicators are powered by an ignition live and either side are not linked but they do pass through the hazzard switch

when the hazard switch is on it switches the indicator flasher over to a permenant live and connects the two sides together.

I would guess you have lost the permenant (spelling :D ) live connection to your hazzard switch.

anyone else got any top tips? i'd love to hear them. maybe some fancy continuity-testing moves or something..? i'd love an excuse to buy one of them. :)

sounds fezable to me.

1. do you indicators work without the hazard switch on??

2. might need to replace flasher unit.

3. also check all the bulbs in the indicator circuit. there could be one that :censored::censored::censored::censored: itself and gone to earth instead of blowing completely.
i had one do that on a customers car and melt the entire indicator circuit wiring.

4. check to see if ya have any globes in as the flasher relies on the earth going throught the globes

5. contacts in the switch may be corroded from the overseas trip. bit of emery paper will fix that.

wiring diagram for indicators and hazards hope this helps ;) -

is it the old style round twin pin flasher unit ? my mates mk1 escort needed a new flasher unit just about every MOT as it used to have enough capacity to flash each side but wasn't man enough to flash both sides at once ! might be worth checking.

in the end we rewired it to use a modern multipin type flasher unit

I'm lookin forward to coming along to these meets etc, I've been lookin at the club vids/pic's and it looks like a top day out. Some damn nice 7's "not that I've seen a bad 1 yet, but I'm just biased when it comes to rotors:D ".

It would be nice if a revival of some sort started on the oldskool front, besides it can only be a good thing for the club, it all adds to the collection. All we need is someone to buy an R100, anyone up for that:D

well I do less than a 2000 miles a year in the 7

Nah don't mind you asking, think I've posted it before anyhow ... cost me £1200 about 3 years ago, but its had a bit spent on it + a little bit of paint due to me running into the back of my mates sisters car (my fault, low sun and no sunglasses)

I would have though an R100 would be rather expensive once imported as they are pretty rare in Aus

Cheers ~ Mike :D

edit

I meant on the road cost as in how much to get it from Aus, shipping costs, taxes, fee's etc. :)

To get the car from Oz, I'm paying £1100 quid, thats roll on roll off, then theres the percentage of the value of the car to be payed duty +vat. The firm that I am using are rather good, they will pay the duty/vat and shipping then once the car clears customs I pay the firm the amount owed. In total I'm looking at around £2900 to get the car here. Then its just mot, first rego fee for the plates (along with my car the R100 will be tax exempt). then off to the nearest petrol station:D .

Once i get the car here I will post a new thread regarding all this, detailing everything I had to go thru etc. I'm sure Gordy would be of good value to as he has been a great help for me with advice and contacts (thanks Gordy:D )

Hope this helps Mike, give me a shout if you want to know more.

I think you should go for it myself:cool

Forgot to add:

Alot of the R100's I have seen have 12A motors and running ear etc, so mechanically you'll be all right, panels and other bits can be sourced, besides its not everyday you crash a car is it:D, plus you'd be tootling along a b it quicker than most to get hit in an R100:cool

MikeLMR
22nd December 2004, 10:15 PM
realistically I don't think I can afford that, I could get a nice enough classic motor in the UK for just the cost of shipping etc. fair enough it'd wouldn't be rotary (well it wouldn't to start with :D)

Hey OLSKOOLROTAR I have some bad news for you - I dont think the "2' is available from this company:(

They do the R100 as I have, and in racing colours, along with a "3" coupe in 3 plain colours. They are "limited editions" of "only"3000
http://publish.hometown.aol.co.uk/jmazdaman/images/picture%20002.jpg

I got these from Stretton Models in Church Stretton. I had to wait a while for them because he did'nt have the "3" in stock and he actually brought it back from France for me. They're made by Ebbro.

http://www.ebbro.com/WEB.htm (http://)

Give the guy a ring or email him - he's really helpfull. He may be able to find a "2" for you from another company

er no and no....
been away over christmas and really busy since. i'm looking into a new steering column loom - OLSKOOLROTOR reckons you can purchase them in US easily enough - but i'd like to run it past an auto elec first in case the problem is elsewhere.
and i'm still trying to decide whether to have a new exhaust made or to make a rudimentary baffle out of steel wool/ chicken wire and/or try to find a mechanic with a hearing impairment..
(my mate suggested i hand the mechanic a couple of £20's and tell him to roll them up and stick them in his ears :p )

this weeks auto budget has already been long spent though, on an 818 (808) 4dr + insurance :D
